Bird

Tezuka's POV

Where is he? It's not like him to skip training. I know I will never admit it, but it has got me worried. What if something has happened?

Subconsciously I start walking faster. Where the hell can he be? He isn't at home. I've already called. His sister hasn't seen him since he left early this morning. And he hasn't told her where he was going to. She presumed he left for tennis practice. It really surprised me how calm she sounded. She wasn't even worried. I swear, she believes too much in those cards…

Sighing I once more dial Fuji's cell phone number.

Beep…

"Hi! I'm Kikumaru Eiji. This is Fujiko's mailbox! He's not here for the moment. But if you leave a message, I'll make sure he calls you back, nya!"

I roll my eyes when once more I hear the acrobat's cheerful voice. Damn it! Why did he switch it off?

-

An hour has passed since the end of practice. I've been past all his favourite spots. And I've found him nowhere. I've got one last chance though… The beach.

I shiver slightly and pull my jacket closer. The wind is freezing.

Smiling I hear the waves roll over the beach. It is relaxing.

My eyes immediately catch a lone figure walking on the sand. His camera in his hand.

Quickly I walk up to him. Fully intending to reprimand him for not showing up.

He turns around when he hears me approach. His eyes closed as usual and a smile gracing his lips. Though there is something strange. He seems… sad… by lack of a better word.

"Ah, Tezuka… Gomen…"

His voice is sincere and I just can't stay angry at him.

I nod, knowing it is all the answer he needs. And within a second he has taken a picture of me. Once more he amazes me with his quick reflexes. I hate it when he does this. And he knows it. That's probably why he tries it so many times.

Looking closer I notice he holds his camera with one hand only. His other arm seems to be holding something against his belly. It earns him one of my rare questioningly looks.

With gentle care he takes his hand away. A little bird is sleeping under it.

"I found it on the sand. Alone and hurt and nearly non-moving."

His voice is soft and I have to strain my ears to hear him above the wind that is racing and the sea that is fighting said wind.

Looking aside, the same way he is looking at, I can see why he was so entranced when I found him. I can see what has captured his attention so much that he didn't come to the courts.

The sea is giving a real show. The beauty of a storm. Luckily it isn't raining.

"I couldn't just abandon it…"

It is as if he's apologising. It certainly sounded that way.

I fling my arms around him, careful to not hurt the bird and the camera in his hands. Kissing him gently.

"Just warn me the next time and don't switch of your cell phone…"

Smiling he leans into my embrace. Shivering slightly.

"Let's go home…"

The End
