Lily knew life would get better. As she sat by the edge of the lake that sunny morning she came to that conclusion. She knew that one day his father would quit drinking. She knew that James Potter would someday stop being a prick. She knew that her Dorcas would finally listen to her advice. Or at least she hoped.
That morning Lily Evans had decided to take a walk. She hadn't quite decided where she would go but she was certain when she woke up at practically dawn that she would make something special of that day. So she decided to take a walk.
She never much liked walks, because they made her think too much; reminded her of the fact that her life was a complete wreck and that she was doing nothing to put it right. But that morning was different. The sun was barely up and the lake shimmered beautifully; the recent dew sparkled on the grass. There was no missing the opportunity.
She was quite lost in her thoughts when he heard the voice, and she didn't have time to react. She had made as stop to rest by the lake and had left her thoughts drift, so she was not very aware of her surroundings.
"Alright, Lil?" She heard, from the person she was least interested at the moment.
She stared at his hopeful face, not with anger, just disappointment. She did believe he had changed; how could she not? He had proved it. But that just made it all more difficult, because it was easier for her to hate him when he was the arrogant bully, the one who would ask her out every single day of the week and wouldn't let her be. This James was much more difficult to loathe.
"I'm sorry James, I just can't handle you right now" She said, and began stalking away."And, by the way," she said without even turning, "you just ruined a perfectly good morning"
James didn't answer back. He just sat where the redhead had been only seconds before and let his own thoughts drift, trying not to think about how badly he had screwed up.
