CHILD'S PLAY
By: Vanessa Sgroi
"You can't run, Dean. You can't hide."
Dean ran anyway, breath sawing painfully in and out of his lungs. The little girl's voice was reminiscent of kid-Lilith's all those years ago. But it was sharper, more sibilant.
"Silly boy," the little girl giggled, "this is like the best game of hide and seek ever. But I. Will. Always. Find. YOU."
The staccato warning beat against Dean's ears. He turned corner after corner, seeking light but finding only a deepening darkness.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are..." she sang.
And then she was there. In front of him. Behind him. Beside him. Reaching. Touching.
"Dean?"
Dean screamed as her touch burned.
She giggled, pulled him closer. "You can't get away from me, Dean!"
"DEAN!"
The older Winchester came awake with a start, a howl trapped in his throat. Strong hands were clamped on each shoulder and he fought against the restraint.
"Whoa, Dean! It's me. It's Sam!"
Sam's words finally penetrated the fog. He slumped and moaned then slowly sat.
"Must've been some nightmare!"
Dean grimaced. "Yeah, yeah—nightmare. Just a nightmare." But he had a feeling it might just be more than that.
