We're trying to leave comments on all the stories, but if you've submitted one and we've somehow overlooked the story, you have my apologies. Rest assured we appreciate every one of them.

Setting: This scene fits into the continuity established in my story "Independence Day in the Springs." No knowledge of that story is needed to comprehend this one. Just thought you might like to know.

McKeller Flash Fiction:

What's It Like?

(297 words)

"I've lived in another galaxy, traveled to other universes and through time. I've fought wars, made first contact with numerous alien species, even shared my consciousness with an alien. But you're taking an adventure I never will." General Samantha Carter allowed a shy smile to cross her face. "Tell me, Jennifer: What's it like being pregnant?"

Doctor Jennifer Keller considered painting a rosy picture for her friend and former boss. Her enthusiasm reminded Jennifer of the time she returned from a tiring week at space camp to be bombarded by a thousand questions from her best friend: You got to go. No fair! I wanted to! Was it fun? Did you meet any astronauts?

Then, as now, a little fibbing might be justified. Instead, "My body is growing and nurturing a life I created with the man I love. How can you beat that?"

Sam nodded. "Sounds like the greatest experience of your life."

"It is." Jennifer paused, waiting for just the right moment to spring the rest. And...there. "It's also the worst: My thighs rub together when I walk. I have to wear support hose, or I'll chafe. My skin breaks out constantly. There's a weird rash on my butt. I'm up two shoe sizes. My rings won't fit on my sausage-sized fingers..."

Sam's eyes grew progressively wider as the tirade continued, which tickled Jennifer to no end. To stay in character was a stuggle.

"Despite all that," Jennifer concluded. "My husband tells me I've never been sexier..."

At that awww-inspiring admission, Sam's eyes returned to their normal proportions. No doubt she was about to finally admit that marriage had turned Rodney into the sweet guy Jennifer proclaimed him to be.

That's when she fired her final salvo: "Which is convenient, because I'm hornier than ever."

The End.
