Angel
By Dan'yu
He saw more in life than a man ever should.
Distant he grew to those who knew him,
Silent and cold as winter's breath
And here she came, his saving grace,
In the form of a loving heart and an innocent face.
Welcoming his scarred and hardened heart.
Love's warm glow to thaw the ice in this frozen man.
By his side she stayed.
Slowly passing their days.
Winter to spring, spring to summer, summer to autumn, autumn to winter.
Seasons came and went, the years creeping by.
As all life must, in a peaceful sleep she lies.
Yielding to the cold dreams of Death,
In the embrace of an eternal rest.
He comes to her this day, to lay flowers on her grave.
Memories of her sweep over him,
Sweet to the touch of mind,
Bitter to the touch of hand.
Out of reach.
A kiss.
A touch.
His name on her lips.
Children born.
Sturdy boys with his strong face.
Pretty girls with her gentle eyes.
His angel, blessed by her love.
His salvation, sent to save him.
His heaven, right here on earth.
His angel's returned to heaven.
He waits for his chance to join her,
But his life mission's not yet through
A young voice calls out, "Grandpa."
A little child at his feet.
A gentle smile touched his lips,
As he took the small hand in his.
Brown eyes stare up at him in wonder.
A little boy with his grandmother's eyes.
This day, he lays a single rose,
On the cold stone of remembrance.
In memory, in love, in hope.
The mother of his children.
His wife.
His lover.
His friend.
His heart.

The skies overhead were a cold, steel gray, overcastting the sun's warm touch. He knelt beside the cold stone of his wife's grave, so lost in his memories, he didn't pay any attention to the dismal cold and damp around him, wrapping around him like a blanket capable of chilling him to the bone. The years had worn him down, his handsome face weathered and lined with age, silver thick in once fiery hair, strong hands rough and gnarled with time. Death had become Kyou Sohma's last opponent, one he could never defeat, for Death had already taken what was dearest to him.
"Grandpa." A pair of warm honey brown eyes peered up at him curiously. A little boy, no more than four years old, his daughter's son, with his grandmother's eyes and his mother's smile. The same eyes that had once captivated him, saved him, loved him. The same eyes of Kyou's love.
Kyou smiled down at the little boy softly, as a small hand wrapped around his own, fragile and young. He gripped the boy's hand warmly, tracing his finger carefully over the words engraved in the headstone. "Do you know who this is, Hikaru?"
The little boy, Hikaru, nodded fiercely, tousling his fiery hair. "Grandmother."
Sohma Tohru
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend
An angel on earth.
Kyou raised his head, smiling softly as the sun began to peek through the clouds, shining down on them. The sun's rays caused the highlights to dance through Hikaru's fiery hair, so like Kyou's. "Let me tell you about her, Hikaru."
Tohru, can you see us now? I know you're watching over us. We miss you, Tohru. I'll be seeing you soon, loveā¦
