AN: This is just what popped into my head while procrastinating homework. It's just a little peak into Matt's head as he's kind of dealing with a crispy best friend and reminiscing of the Wammy's days.

It had been a week since Matt pulled Mello out of the explosion. It had been the longest week Matt had experienced. His brittle mind kept playing the events of that night over, and over again in his mind, never ceasing. The bubbled, charred skin of his friend, the smell of it, Mello screaming; those screams so raw and hoarse and exceedingly agonized. It sounded like nothing Matt had ever heard.

The red head was currently seated next to his friend's bedside. He'd pulled some strings and managed to get some drugs to knock Mello out—and some valium for himself—along with a life time's supply of bandages and burn cream, and tried to fix the broken blonde as best he could.

Mello looked a lot more like a kid, when he was knocked out, Matt decided as he stared at the Mafia boss. His face no longer had his signature scowl or manic grin. Matt could see the little boy he knew and loved, the child version, from Wammy's. He missed the days when Mello's smile was pure, his eyes always bright. Mello only looked haunted anymore, horrors of the life of a teenaged runway seeming to ruin him.

Classes had just been let out. It was Friday, children sprinted down the halls, the sound of laughter bounced off of neutral coloured walls, echoing even as the last of kids left rooms.

"Mattie!" Pounce. Said ten year old crashed to the ground, limbs flailing wildly, in vain as he tried to keep balance. The floor seemed fairly intent on greeting his face, though, and in seconds, his face was assaulted with hardwood floors, teeth seeming to rattle with impact.

"Mello," he groaned. "Get your boney butt off of me." Matt sat up, rubbing gingerly at his cheek.

The over excited blonde shot him a sheepish smile. "Sorry. But guess what? I tied with Near! I studied so hard and it paid off!" The blonde was practically glowing, his wide smile split his face in two and his blue eyes seemed electrified in their intensity.

"I'm happy for you Mels," Matt offered a soft smile.

Those were the days.
