Sam sputtered awake, heart racing, mouth dry, body tense. His eyes were feral as they traveled over the lamp, the table, Dean's duffle; draped in shadows but solid edges in sharp relief to the hazy figures haunting his subconscious. His fingers worked in tandem with his eyes, gripping roughly at the stiff pillowcase; desperately seeking to ground himself in reality. A shudder worked its way up his spine, pulling down the corners of his mouth, constricting his lungs.
"Sam?"
Dean.
"You okay?" Words washing over him like salve soothing an open wound. Relief tangible. Making it possible to breathe.
"Yeah."
