DM Edith the Mother
''Dere doesn't dat look splendid'' Gru beamed proudly. ''Er what is it?'' Margo asked with wonder. ''Eet's a chicken coop''Gru explained ''I thought dat eet would be nice to have some chickens as pets rather dan hate dem as enemies. He hadn't forgotten Pollito that quickly so he thought friendly chickens would make a nice change.
It wasn't that long before the chickens arrived. Gru decided that a chain linked fence would be perfect for keeping Kyle from harming any of the farmer's chickens. Gru and the farmer unloaded the chickens into the big wide pen.
''I'll be back for them in a couple of days Mr Gru'' the farmer said sincerely. ''Dat'll be fine with me'' Gru replied ''your chickens are in very good hands''. The next day, however he couldn't find the mother hen at all.
''Dis won't do at all ever'' he said ''the mother hen can't just go off and leave her eggs all on their own, eet's not really safe for them''. Gru thought about what he could do for a second. The he had the very answer.
''Oh gurls'' he called for his three daughters ''we need to find a way to keep de eggs from getting too cold''. Margo, Edith and Agnes arrived on the scene in no time. As Margo found a fury blanket to keep the eggs as warm as possible.
Edith noticed one of the eggs already starting to hatch. Just then a tiny little chick popped out! It hopped into Edith's hands and as she picked it up, feathers fluttered all over her sweater. Gru arrived in time to see everything.
''De chick thinks you're it's mum'' he said giving Edith a smile. ''Oh yeah'' Edith said. It was pretty sweet being a young mother! It was all too soon when the time came for to go back to the farm. ''Mr Gru I found the mother hen!'' the farmer exclaimed ''she had stowed away in the back of my trailer so how did you get on?''. ''Very well'' Gru replied ''and de gurls have been helping to keep de eggs as warm as they can be''. ''That's good'' the farmer said ''you must be sure to visit my farm and see the chicks hatch out of the eggs''. ''Dat's for sure'' Gru agreed humbly ''but one of eggs did hatch and a chick did come out''.
He led the farmer to where Edith was still cuddling the chick. ''It's been nice looking after you'' Edith told the chick her voice choking up with tears ''but your real mum's waiting for you in the truck''. But the chick didn't want to leave Edith so she had to persuade it.
''Go on, no go on'' she choked quietly as she gently pushed the chick towards the farmer's truck. Edith gave a huge sniff and big tears rolled down her checks. Gru quickly gave her a tissue for her to blow her nose.
''Oh Edith'' he said gently, squeezing her tightly. ''Every person and animal has to live somewhere. Listen the farmer said we could visit his farm. It's not too far away you can see the chicks there''. Edith knew that Gru was right.
Some days later, she did see the chicks again. Edith could see that they looked very snug in the straw. Despite her sadness before, she could help smiling at the little chicks.
