Prologue: Stars

The sun cast a golden glow across the dancing wheat fields. Clouds scattered across the horizon as far as the eye could see. I sighed. How long had it been since I've visited a town? Two, three, four months? Living life as a farm girl, you never visited the bustling towns like Henesys often or strolled the paths of Lith Harbour that resided beside the vast sea too often. It was always a typical view of crop and sky. But that didn't mean I didn't know what was happening outside of this little countryside.

The news was everywhere; even the children were talking about it. ".. Queen of the elves." they would say. Mercedes, they called her. Wielding a dual bowgun and shooting at such a speed all you see a big colourful blur. But hey, how would I know if that's true or not.

I've also heard of Evan, who's a dragon master now. I smiled faintly.

Evan..

My mind suddenly went blank, like a plug draining all the water out of a swimming pool. I plucked a strand of grass and rubbed my thumb across the smooth surface, recollecting my thoughts.

I remember when we were young, he would always run around chasing ribbon pigs and end up scraping his knee every single time. I chuckled at the thought of it.

Evan also used to have a weird thing with orange juice.. I mean, you have your typical orange juice lovers and then there's Evan; chugging down what seemed like cartons after cartons at breakfast. There was also this time when I was laughing because he was freaking out since there was no orange juice left in his fridge and we were about to be late for school- He ended up running to my house to steal my juice instead.

Don't go..

A tear rolled down my cheek but I hastily smeared it away with the back of my hand. Does he miss chasing pigs around? Does he still have a weird craving for orange juice every morning? Will he ever come back to his farm and help out Utah and his parents? Does he.. Does he miss me?

I blinked back another tear and tilted my head upwards. Layers of purple and blue had started to chase the sun and its vibrant orange colours out of sight.

Before I knew it, stars were littered across the sky, twinkling silent messages to whoever was watching them here on Victoria Island.

I stood up and brushed my denim skirt clean from whatever filth it had collected while I was sitting down and stared up at the sky once more.

"May the stars watch over you, Evan." I whispered quietly to myself, and followed the crumbling path back to my house.
