Important Author's Note: This fic was originally in response to the 100 pairing challenge. Unfortunately, I've had to resign from this challenge. If you've seen this before...sorry. However, I really liked this piece and thought I'd repost it anyway. Again, apolgies.
Downpour
Lily woke up to the sound of rain. It wasn't the usual sort of rain that normally occurred in the areas surrounding Godric's Hollow, a pale dreary drizzle that left a mist that chilled you through your sweater. Through the window across from the side of the bed, Lily could see it was another kind of rain entirely. It was the glorious storm that wouldn't last for long, but would leave a path in its wake and memories if you had been able to experience it.
The few candles lit in the room didn't reveal much – the sky wasn't that light in the first place, and the tick-tock, tick-tock, on the wall above her head suggested it was early – too early for Lily to be up, but she didn't tend to follow the rules, and schedules weren't that important when there wasn't anything to stick to.
An arm was slinked around her waist, and perhaps if Lily had been married for only a few months instead of over a year she might have blushed. Instead, she smiled and cuddled back into her husband's form, and shut her eyes, listening.
Lips pushed down into her hair, and a mumbled voice spoke of love and wasn't it too early to get up?
She told James to be quiet, for it was raining. He immediately began to move away, moving towards the opposite, cold, side of the bed fumbling for his glasses.
Lily nearly whimpered at the loss of her husband, but instead reached back, grabbing at his elbow, and jerkily pulling him back. She wasn't stronger than him, but he was caught off guard and only just woken. James flopped down beside her again, and Lily, happy, pulled his arms tighter around her.
She then whispered that the rain was beautiful. He replied he would know if he had his glasses. Lily shook her head, and the hair fell over their arms, She replied that he needed to just listen and be still.
Both were an ornery sort, yet James complied, pulling his arms tighter around her, pulling her close and resting his chin on her forehead. Together they lay there, in the early hours, content to just be and listen to Mother Nature's forces.
