I looked around, my shoulders slumped. "Oh, great. This is just what I need. A town full of freaks and nobody I know." I walked from the train station and onto the street. There were people walking past in all directions. Even a few officers. I slung my red hair over my shoulder and walked on. People turned and glanced at me, some frowning and others shaking their heads. I was wearing a red cloak and a green shirt with blue jeans. My shoes were black and my eyes were bright blue. I walked down the road and saw a small water fountain covered in rose vines. I slammed my fists together and placed my fingertips on the fountain. The vines started to slither off of the fountain and landed on the ground by it. I held down the small button and took a slurp of fresh water. I heard a shout and I looked over my shoulders. A small blonde guy started walking towards me.
"You!" he called.
I cocked my head and stepped away from the fountain. The kid came up to me with a frown on his face. "Excuse me, but what was that you just did?"
I folded my arms. "What?"
He pointed to the fountain. "What was that?"
"Oh," I laughed. "It's a form of this thing called alchemy. It's from Xing, and-"
The kid cut me off then. "I know what alchemy is. You're telling me that it's from Xing?"
I shifted my weight to one foot. "Yeah. Why?"
"Me and my brother have been trying to study Xing-styled alchemy for some time now. My name is Edward Elric. I'm the Fullmetal Alchemist. Could you provide us any information on the subject?" Ed flipped out his state-alchemist watch, proving his title.
I gazed at the silver watch. "Yeah, sure. In turn, though, could you provide me with some lodging in this town? I'm in a pickle when it comes to this sort of thing."
Ed cracked a grin. "Equivalent exchange, huh?"
I nodded.
He smiled and turned around. "My friend lives in Resemboll. You up for the travel? It's a pretty quiet town, perfect for studying this sort of thing."
"Sure, Elric. First off, though, I want to meet your brother before I go agreeing to travel with you. I don't want a train ride with a jerk." I followed Ed as he started to walk.
He started to laugh. "Ah, that's a first. Al is the type of guy that makes me look like a jerk. I'm sure he'll enjoy the company."
"Al?" I cocked my head again. "Weird name. Is that like a nickname or something?"
"His name is Alphonse." Ed corrected. "Come on. He's in our apartment." Ed walked up a flight of stairs and flung open the door.
There was a large guy in a suit of armor sitting on the couch. "Brother! You're home. But who did you bring with us?"
"This is-" Ed started, but looked back at me.
"Julie." I said, glancing at Al.
"Julie. She's going to help us learn Xing style alchemy."
Al's eyes lit up. "Okay!" he said cheerfully.
