Chapter 1

"Stop it!" I screamed. "Leave him alone!"

"Shut her up," my father said, "before she wakes up the whole neighborhood."

My mother grabbed me and through me in a corner. I tried to get up but was too slow. She put duct tape over my mouth and proceeded to tie me up. I watched as my father beat Jason, my brother, with a bat. I tried to get away, but she was too strong. I knew that this was it; soon Jason would be dead. My father swung the bat one last time and hit Jason in the ribs. I screamed as Jason fell to the floor.

"Wake up!" my mother yelled. "You're yelling in your sleep again."

I sat up in my little makeshift bed on the floor in the small, dark laundry room still shaken from my nightmare. "If you don't get ready, you'll be late for school. And don't think I'm going to drive you if you miss the bus."

"O.K." I muttered. "I'm getting up."

"Pathetic." my mother mumbled as she turned and went back to her and my father's bedroom.

I walked into the bathroom and looked at my reflection in the mirror. My red greasy hair was a mess as usual, and my brown eyes had huge dark circles around them. "She's right," I thought, "I am pathetic."

I went and found a pair of dirty underwear and put them on along with an old pair of jeans and a plain white t-shirt. I brushed my teeth and hair and went down to the kitchen for something to eat. As usual, there was nothing in the refrigerator and there was only one banana left. I couldn't eat that or mom would be pissed and probably give me a black eye like last time. My mother is a little over dramatic.

I put my books in my book bag and sat on the couch waiting for the bus to come. I was nervous about going to school today because I had a huge History exam that I was not ready for at all. I was never very good at remembering names and dates. It's not like my parents cared about how I did in school, it was just that I wanted to get good grades so that I could maybe go to a college one day and get away from here. With the grades I've been getting lately, it didn't look like that was going to happen.

I heard my father coming down the hall, and I wasn't in the mood to deal with him so I left for the bus early.

Chapter 2

"What happened to you?" asked my Emily. "You look like you haven't gotten sleep in days."

"You're not that far off," I said. "I've had nightmares the past four nights."

"What were they about?" she asked.

I remembered my father's warning to never say anything to anyone about Jason. "I don't remember," I replied.

She sighed and put her long black hair into a ponytail. "You never remember your nightmares. Oh let me tell you about my dream. It was so weird. There were these purple marshmallow bunnies that were trying to kill me…"

I stopped listening and looked out the window. Would I ever forget that day? My mother and father both warned me that if I ever told anyone anything about that day, they would kill the person I told. They said that even if I did tell anyone, they already destroyed the evidence and there was no proof left. Dad said he's even set it up so that if he must he can frame me. He's a good lawyer so he probably could have me put away in some insane asylum if he wanted.

"Lizzy, are you listening to me?" Emily asked.

"Oh yeah. Of course I was listening to you," I said. "Are you nervous about the History test?"

"A little bit, but I studied really hard"

"Do you think you could do me a favor? You have History in first period, right?"

"Oh no, you can't be serious. I've never cheated in my life!"

"Please! I'm begging you! All you have to do is write down the answers for me."

"Why is this so important? It's only one test."

"Please just do this for me. I'll never ask you again."
