Nearly a year since the dragons left the surface, the Hooligans finally begun to adjust to a life without dragons again. Almost a little too well.
Everything went back to the way it used to be on Berk, well.. except for the war and the fact they were no longer living on old Berk, which admittedly had always been a fruitless heap of rock. New Berk had much more to offer in terms of everything. Even the winters here were far less harsh, giving room to new traditions and a more laid-back, comfortable lifestyle.
Most of all, Hiccup was no longer useless as opposed to his predicament eight years ago. Instead, he was Chief of Berk and married to the finest shieldmaiden in the Archipelago. On top of that, he was now a newly baked father.
Fatherhood was not something Hiccup had given much thought to before it actually happened. So it surprised him how deeply it ended up affecting him.
The birth of his daughter gave him a whole new meaning in life. He could still remember being overwhelmed with this strange yet strong sense of joy the day he held her in his arms for the first time.
"She's so... small," he had mumbled, glancing back at his tired wife with a shy smile. She had never looked more beautiful to him.
Astrid stared at him with adoring eyes, the mere sight of father and daughter together making every second of pain and agony from the birthing process worth it. She had never felt more fulfilled than in that moment.
"She is beautiful," Astrid said with a sigh, exhaustion laced in her voice. Hiccup's face broke into a dopey grin. "Yeah. Yeah, she is," he concurred in an emotional whisper. "The product of our love."
Because that was what a child was, wasn't it? The manisfistation of their love, the result of their love-making. Hiccup blushed slightly despite himself. He didn't think he could ever get used to Astrid being his wife, and now the mother of his child.
As Hiccup stared down at the tiny bundle of softness, he wished for this moment to last for forever.
In the upcoming months, Hiccup observed his daughter sitting up on her own for the first time, learning to crawl and speaking her first word.
It was late in the afternoon when the latter had occured. He had come home tired from a busy day and was in the midst of hanging up his furs when his daughter crawled towards him excitedly.
Hiccup had immediatly picked her up. "Did you miss me, young lady?" he cooed at her with a gleeful smile.
The toddler grabbed his nose and giggled.
"Oh? You are gonna it play it that way, huh?" He tickled her tummy.
The young baby broke into laughter.
Hiccup sighed in delight at the sound before placing butterfly kisses all over her head.
"Don't mind me, you two," Astrid commented as she entered the room, walking past them towards the kitchen. "I'm just getting some water."
Hiccup smirked at her just as his daughter grabbed his hair.
And then it happened, making both Hiccup and Astrid freeze in their tracks.
Astrid gasped. "Did she just...?"
"Da-da!"
There it was again.
Hiccup was too stunned to respond for a moment.
While Astrid huffed in mock-annoyance. "Seriously? Dada, not mama?" she said with a pout.
A grin slowly broke on his face.
He carried the baby over to where Astrid stood and pulled her into his embrace. She said nothing, simply wrapping her arms around father and daughter.
And this was one of many moments Hiccup would come to look back on.
Each night after chiefing he would come home to his girls and feel like the luckiest man alive.
Little did he know his family would soon be expanded. The day his son was born, he found himself a changed man again.
He may have lost Toothless but he had gained so much more, and he wouldn't trade his little family for anything in the world.
AN: As you can see I still can't get over Hiccstrid and their babies. HTTYD 3 destroyed me with all the fluff.
