This is the beginning of a long line of unrelated drabbles. For more information on the reason behind these snippets, feel free to check my profile.
The title of this exercise is "Imperative", and the idea is to write a short story entirely in the imperative.
I chose to write a drabble from Chi-Chi's perspective, since her character suits the imperative... pretty well, ha ha. This drabble takes place during Goku's seven year absence.
Escape
Don't ever let yourself slip into a feeling of complacency.
Wash the dishes. Scrub the floors. Hang out the laundry. At the end of the day, glance in the mirror as you pull off your housewife's clothing to reveal the princess underneath. Don't cry. Just…don't cry.
Hide the worry in your eyes as you bark orders to your sons. Watch them glance over their shoulders before they talk about fights, just to be sure their mother won't overhear and overreact. Wonder why they don't remember that you were once a young fighter, too. Swallow your guilt and batter them with your words.
Pretend the nightly news stories excite you. Act like the only thing that pleases you more are good grades to hang on the refrigerator. Never, never let them see that glint in your eye when they talk about battle in secret. Open your mouth to comment, but let no sound escape.
Wait until darkness overtakes the forest - then slip past their bedroom doors without a sound. Listen for sounds of stirring, and don't move until you're completely sure that it was just the sound of a cricket. Let the light of the moon bring shadows into forms so that you can see properly on your way. Don't stop to check on the radishes - they'll be there in the morning. Forget your worries. Tomorrow, remember them.
For now - run.
Slink past the bushes that hold you back. Let them barricade you into this life no more. When you are far enough, step out into the open of the clearing. Look up into the night sky, and let your hair fall out of its encasement just as you will - just for tonight.
Listen for signs of tagalongs. Watch for spying eyes, and finding none, take a deep breath. Let your voice reach up to the heavens and utter one last command for the day. Listen as it rings over the tops of mountains and wait for it to reach the one it seeks. Anticipate the arrival, and watch the dark horizon.
Catch a glimpse of shining gold., and witness its descent. Watch your beautiful slice of heaven as it comes to take you away. Step onto the cloud, knowing that it will not let you fall. Hope that you are still right. Feel it lift you away from the land, and away from all the cares of mortality. Let tears of relief flood down your skin to fall on the softness of the cloud. Allow yourself this time to grieve. Let yourself use this, and only this, as time to feel sorry about everything.
Sit upright, suddenly, as you feel familiar arms wrap around you in comfort. Forget for a moment the impossibility of such an occurrence and let yourself melt into his embrace. Forget the world, just for now.
When you have landed, step off gracefully. Replace your too-familiar hairstyle and pin each strand into submission. Let a sigh escape into the night.
Remember who you are. Don't ever let yourself slip into a feeling of complacency.
