"It's beautiful," Mel murmured as she gazed at the auburn sky. I mumbled my agreement, and stared across the sea and into the streaked horizon. It wasn't the first sunset I'd seen since moving to Angeles, but it was defiantly one of the best. She picked up a stone and skimmed it across the smooth ocean; her fingers moving quickly, yet half-heartedly along the slippery pebble. "How do you do that?" I asked, honestly curious. She chuckled, "What? Mr I-spend-all-my-free-time-at-the-beach doesn't know how to skim a stone? I'm shocked!" Her tone was sarcastic, but I knew she was only teasing, so I broke into a grin. "No one's ever taught me! And I don't spend all my spare time at the beach. Some I spend with Egg and some I spend with you! There can only be so much of me to go around!" She rolled her eyes, "Yeah yeah, just keep telling yourself that!" She playfully nudged me in the shoulder. "Will you teach me? After all, I am the reason you can surf," I said, attempting puppy dog eyes. She got up, "Okay sure… If you stop looking at me like that! The puppy dog look is so not for you!" I grinned and copied her by standing.

"Okay, pick a flat, smooth stone. Hold it loosely in your hand and then flick your wrist in the direction you want it to go. Try and get it to fly as straight as possible." She demonstrated, the stone jumping effortlessly from her hands. I tried to copy her elegance, but my stone just ended up landing in the water with a loud, 'Plunk!' She laughed, "That was… nearly it…" She picked to more stones and skimmed the first, before handing the other to me. I held it in my hand as she'd shown me, but before I could throw the stone she grabbed my wrist and slowly swung it back. I felt something zip inside me as her fingers made contact with my skin. Just before I straightened my arm out completely she murmured, "Now," And the stone left my palm, skimming the water three times perfectly. "Pretty good," She smiled, before adding, "For a first timer!" I stuck my tongue out and she punched my playfully in the arm.

"Come on we better get going, or my mum'll freak." She stood up and grabbed her beach bag and towel from the floor. I snatched up my surf board and we walked quickly along the sand. "You can come for tea if you like," Mel asked as we walked up to her boat. I was just about to agree when I remembered the stacks of homework I had. "I've still got my project to finish, but I can come over tomorrow, if that's any good?" She grinned, "Lockie! Those projects were set weeks ago! Why isn't yours done?" I grinned back at her, "You know music's not my best subject!" She laughed before saying, "Well okay then I'll see you at school tomorrow, Bye Lockie!" And then she was walking back to her house, nearly before I even had time to splutter, "Bye Mel! I smiled as I walked all the way home. Days at the beach with Mel were great, defiantly some of the best of my young existence. I just hoped that they could continue for as long as possible. A real friend is hard to find, difficult to leave and impossible to forget. And if there was one thing Lockie was certain of when it came to Mel, was that she was most certainly a friend.
