If there is one thing Rory Williams has ever been sure about in his entire life, absolutely certain beyond a doubt, it is that he is in love with Amy Pond. Also he is a living breathing human being. So when he feels the auton concious pulling him away from Amy, so soon after he just got her back, he doesn't understand why his body is trying to betray him. He's not like the other Romans, the autons who dance to their master's tune. He's Rory. He's real. He's not leaving.
He uses everything in him, mind, body and soul, to stay with Amy. His Amy. Sweet Amy who is crying with joy at his return; now that she finally remembers he was lost in the first place.
Amy who is sharp and brilliant and tells him to show her the ring. Thier ring. A symbol of a love so real and undeniable that even time itself can't erase it. It binds him to her, keeps him rooted to the spot and he can feel the urge to join the others grow smaller and smaller.
He lets out a breath that he isn't sure is even real anymore. Nothing in his life is sure and certain. Not since he died. Not since he woke up as a Roman in 102 AD with the memories of two lives running through his mind. Nothing is certain. Nothing but how much he loves the redhead in his arms. So he allows himself his sigh of relief as his body finally stops fighting and lets himself be with her.
Later, when Amy is lying cold and dead in his arms, he wishes he hadn't fought to stay with her. He wishes he had gone with the others, left her alone; safe. Maybe the plan, if there ever was a plan, was for him to stay all along. Maybe that's why his body fought so hard to leave her. He'd given her up so many times. To the Doctor, to the universe, to death. Why couldn't he have done it just one more time?
"I'm sorry." He whispers to her unhearing ears as he stares in to her unseeing eyes. "I'm sorry."
Rory Williams is sure of one thing in his after life, absolutely certain beyond a doubt. He isn't one of the good guys anymore.
