John opened one eye and looked up at the ceiling. On the table beside him the alarm clock was going off. He reached over and smacked it with his hand, cutting off the annoying buzzing that had just jerked him from the most incredible dream he'd ever had in his life.

A slow smile crossed his face and he stretched lazily, this time not caring if he'd kicked the bedcovers off and his feet were dangling over the edge of the bed. He was due for a few extra minutes of free time anyway. Even Carson said that'd been working too hard and needed to take a break besides there was no one to see him, so who cared?

Twenty minutes, a hot shower and a shave later, he was ready for the day.

He was whistling when he picked up his jacket and headed out the door, snagging his laptop on the way. There were no impending disasters looming on the horizon that he knew of so he decided that today would be a good day to finally get some of those reports that Elizabeth was always nagging him about.

He was just sitting down to breakfast when Teyla came in, looking worried and haggard.

"What's wrong with you?" He asked as she grabbed a bowl of fruit and sat down at the table across from him.

"I am just tired, I guess." Teyla yawned, covering her mouth with her hand.

"Didn't get much sleep, huh?"

"No." She rubbed at her tired eyes. She gave him a puzzled look. "May I ask you a question, Colonel?"

"Shoot." He took a sip of coffee and checked off another report done. At this rate he was going to be finished by lunch.

"Last night…" Teyla shook her head slightly. "Last night…did you hear anything strange?"

John shrugged. "Nope. I slept like a baby. Why?"

"I do not know…" She sighed, heavily. "It was like nothing I had ever heard before. Your quarters are near mine…are you sure that you heard nothing?"

John thought for a minute and then shook his head. "Nope, pretty sure that I didn't hear anything. What did it sound like?"

"Hey." Rodney plopped at the table next to Sheppard.

He eyed the half empty tray. "What's the matter? You on a diet?"

"Guess, I'm just not hungry." Rodney sighed.

"That's a first." Sheppard snorted and even Teyla smiled.

"Ha Ha, very funny." Rodney growled.

"What's wrong with you?" Sheppard tried not to grin. "Let me guess, you didn't sleep very good last night either."

"How did you know?" Rodney looked surprised. "Did you guys hear it too?"

"Teyla heard it." Sheppard shrugged and picked up his coffee cup. "Whatever it was. I didn't hear a thing."

Rodney looked at Teyla. "What did you hear?"

Teyla shook her head. "It was the most awful sound. Like that of a wounded animal crying in pain."

Rodney snorted. "Sounded more like a big bull moose caught in a trap if you ask me."

At that moment the swallow of coffee John had taken decided to go down the wrong way his face turned an ugly shade of red and he started to choke.

"Colonel!" Teyla was on her feet, slapping him on the back.

Rodney grabbed his tray and scooted down to the next seat but first grabbing Sheppard's lap top and dragging it safely out of the way.

"Thanks, Rodney." Sheppard managed to gasp out when he could finally catch his breath.

"Well…" Rodney shrugged and dug into his breakfast before it got too cold.

"Colonel, perhaps you should go back to your quarters and rest awhile." Teyla laid a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Perhaps you did not sleep as well as you thought."

John thought about for a second and then decided she was right.

He only had a few more reports to do and he did need some more of that rest. He picked up his lap top and headed back to his quarters.

Yep, it was going to be a really good day in the Pegasus Galaxy
