They stood impeccably still, wands held limply from hands that would not force death upon the other. They didn't look like enemies, in fact they looked like they had just found one another after years apart and it was partly true, it had been years since Minerva McGonagall found herself in the overpowering presence of this man. It brought back memories that she'd rather forget hopes that had been long buried and the fact that he was unchangeable, he would never give up his plans.

She hoped that she would forget him throughout the years but she never had and from the calculating look in his eye it seemed he had not forgotten either. He remembered the many times she had talked to him in this very spot and he had tried to convince her to be one of his chief lieutenants. She had shaken her head, screwed up her face in disgust and walked away. She'd always come back though, to the same spot at the same time knowing he'd be there and he'd asked again. She'd refused again. It became a pattern until the day she never came, until the day she truly decided that they were enemies.

She had heard of his deeds, of his murders and of his single minded cruelty but she could not kill him now while his wand was not even raised against her. She told herself that it was because she was a Gryffindor and killing while her enemy refused to kill her was not noble. She refused to acknowledge the full reason.

"Join me, Minerva and I could give you the whole world and you won't die in a pointless battle." His tone was silky and smooth, in the past she may have considered it for the briefest second but she had built up an immunity to that tone and she just shook her head not even needing to think.

"I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me." She was determined and it was noticeable in every tense line of her face.

"As you wish." His voice hissed like a snake and if she wasn't mistaken she could hear a faint tinge of anger and disbelief.

The battle started and she had no time to dwell on it. She fired curses and ducked and weaved and she didn't die that night.

Maybe because none of the curses fired were green.
