Chapter 1

A cold breeze swept across the cemetery, ruffling leaves to fall easily onto those unfortunate graves. Year by year, more of those graves were appearing, carrying death in their coffins. What could anyone expect in Sunnydale? Sure, the name sounds cheerful and jovial, but it was to hide away evidence of the Hellmouth.

A slim figure was kneeling down before one of the small, rounded tombstones. She had placed a bouquet of blood red roses on top of the marble stone. It read,

JOYCE SUMMERS
Caring Mother.

The girl brushed away her long chestnut hair from her face and uttered a silent farewell to the night. Checking her watch, blood started to drain from her face in awareness. It was half past one in the morning! Buffy was so going to kill her.

"Where is Dawn?" A voice recognized as the ex-demon Anya's chirped out. Blank silence and puzzlement rose among the group of friends in the Summer's living room. They had been researching on the latest Big Bad and no one had though to check on Dawn's bedroom.

A blonde haired woman crossed her arms over her chest and exhaled a pained breath. Tears were evident in her blue eyes, but her stony features covered up. "I know." A with, known as Willow, gasped in surprise and stuttered, "I- It's the d-day you mom died, right Buffy?" More a statement than a question, really. Buffy nodded solemnly. She had concentrated so hard, on what was happening now, that she forgot what happened before. Forgotten her own mother's death day.

Dawn started to dash as quickly as she could to Revello Drive. Then, something jerked sharply at her wrist. She winced in pain as her arm was twisted backwards, unable to scream for a hand had clamped over her mouth. Shutting her eyes, she did what her instinct told her to do. Dawn channeled all her strength into her left arm and jammed her fist into her attacker's face, if it had a face. Success! Quiet whimpers followed, her cue to run for it.

By the time she reached the doorway, she realized what a mess she must looked like. Ugly, black and blue bruises ran all the way up her arm and four bleeding nail marks were scarred into the side of her cheek. A brand new Express shirt was ripped at the sleeve. 'Just great. I look like I've just been harassed.' Dawn muttered sarcastically in her confused mind. She reached under the Welcome mat and began searching for a spare key. 'Damn! Where is it?'

A certain bleached blonde vamp was swaggering his way towards the Summers house when he had seen, with vampiric sight, Dawn in a horrible condition. Spike ran the rest of the way there. "Bloody hell, lil' Bit! What happened to you?" At the sound of his voice, she yelped and jumped right into him.

"Gotta perfect that landing of yours, platelet." He smirked. Even though he had a chip in his noggin didn't mean he couldn't act a tad evil occasionally. Dawn clambered off him and turned an embarrassing shade of pink. "Well, I startled. I mean Dawn startled. I mean—Argh!" Completely forgetting the key, she stalked away.

Jingle, jingle. The upset girl turned back and saw him swinging a golden key on his finger. "Aren't you missing something?"
