Kate sighed as she stretched on the couch and rubbed her swollen stomach. A scare earlier in the week had forced Kate to rest at home this week and she was a little bit glad. She was more tired than she cared to admit and she liked being home when it was quiet and she could focus on getting little things done in the nursery. She had just settled down with her book when the front door slammed and a tearful Alexis stormed in.

"Dad" Alexis yelled though her sobs

"Lex" Kate replied "Honey he's at the station with Ryan and Espo"

Alexis nodded as she stood by the couch. Kate moved to one side and opened her arms to the young girl. Alexis cuddled into her side and rested her head on the detectives lap and sobbed. Kate gently ran her fingers though her hair and listened as Alexis's sobs settled down and she fell asleep. Kate pulled out her phone and sent a 911 text to Rick. He quietly walked through the door half an hour later, worry etched over his face. He knelt down in front of Kate and kissed her softly before watching Alexis sleep.

"Hey" Kate said softly

"Did she say what was wrong" Rick asked in a whisper

"No. She came in sobbing and asking for you and when she finally settled down enough to talk she fell asleep"

"Thanks for texting me. I saw I had a missed call but she didn't leave a message"

Kate nodded and smiled as Rick kissed her before gently waking up Alexis. She sat up and threw herself into her fathers arms. Kate quietly excused herself and slipped upstairs to change for her afternoon shopping trip with Lainey. Down stairs Alexis sniffled as she sat in her fathers office.

"What's wrong pumpkin?" Rick asked "This isn't like you"

"So you know how I was supposed to go visit mom next weekend? Well I forgot that's when Kate's baby shower is and I called mom to tell her and reschedule and she yelled at me. Then she insulted Kate and the baby and wouldn't stop." Alexis said softly

"I'm sorry sweetheart"

"I love mom, but I love Kate too and I promised to be at the shower and I want to be there"

"I know sweetheart. You didn't do anything wrong. Go wash your face and I think Kate would love to take you dress shopping with her and Lanie. I will even had over my credit card."

Alexis smiled and hugged and kissed her father before racing out of the room. He closed the door softly and dialed his ex wife. He waited for her to pick up and sighed when she did.

"Ricky" Meredith said sweetly as she answered her phone

"No. Not Ricky" Rick replied "This is your daughters father. A very pissed off father"

"What did Kate do?"

"No. No. Not Kate. You. YOU yelled at Alexis and made her cry. What is wrong with you?"

"That little tartlet of yours is making her miss our shopping weekend for a stupid baby shower"

"First of all, Kate is my wife and we are having a baby. Second Alexis is 20 and can do what ever the hell she wants. She realized she was over booked and called you to reschedule. You don't get to yell at her about that. You don't get to yell at her ever."

"I am her mother Rick. Not Kate"

"Then act like it. You will call Alexis tonight or tomorrow and you will apologize. And don't you ever talk bad about my wife and either of my children again."

Rick hung up the phone and threw it down on the desk. He looked up as Kate opened the door and smiled before pulling her into his arms.

"Hey" Kate said softly

"Hey" Rick replied

"Alexis told me what happened. And I heard you yelling on the phone. I can only imagine you let Meredith have it"

"I shouldn't have yelled at her"

"You were in full dad mode. You defended me and your children. It was kind of sexy"

Rick laughed softly as they kissed and walked out to the kitchen. Both smiled at Alexis sitting at the counter eating an apple and looking in a magazine.
