Brennan found herself curled up against Booth; her tears shed for Nigel Murray, but also for the possibility of the loss of Booth. She didn't have to think of what life without Booth would be like, she knew, it was no life worth living. Rationally, she knew that there was no way it was her fault, Nigel Murray simply answered the phone at the wrong time. But the pain in her heart seemed ceaseless, the tears poured endlessly, and the guilt and grief were unbearable.
Booth noticed this change in her, he always knew how loving and big her heart really was but this was solid evidence, she would be proud. He sensed her tears didn't stop at mourning Nigel Murray's death, things were never that simple. He didn't expect her to blame herself or think Nigel thought she could keep him there but most of all he couldn't ever possibly fathom how much she couldn't live without him. So it startled him at first when she asked if he would make the sperm donation. After much thought her tears were explained...she mourned the loss of his safety. She wanted a legacy of him, if he were to give in to the god's will. She wanted him. She wanted his child.
Obligation is something you feel you must do for someone often due to prior debt, love is the eternal obligation. Booth would out of love do what he was doing before out of obligation. Brennan needed this connection, it was more than a biological imperative, she needed a little Booth. Connections are not key to scientists, they are not rational they slow down the species, she needs to go fast.
But things changed with the brodskey dying, 4 weeks of change and that connection was palpable, in a sonogram that is.
