This idea popped into my head earlier today, and I thought it was cute.
The Itch.
Mary, Lucy, and Anne bustled around me, fixing my hair an adjusting the skirts of my dress to lay evenly. Lucy gingerly laced a flowery broach on my sash, then took it off again, frowning in disaproval.
"Too much." She announced and scurried over to her little box which was sitting on my bedside table, and began to ruffle through it.
All the while, I was scratching diligently at my ear. It had been itching like mad ever sense I woke up this morning. A mosquito must have come in through my window last night, and bit me. It had been really hot last night, and my fan had unfortunately broken down. And now I had an annoyingly itchy red bump on my ear lobe.
When the three girls finally proclaimed that I was ready for breakfast, I nodded in thanks to them, and hustled out the door and down the main stair way. I was starving, to say the least. I had been on a date with Maxon last night, a dinner date, out in the garden. We had quite a lovely time talking, and had forgotten all about our food until it was already cold. I should have just eaten it cold.
I hurried into the dining hall and took my seat, nodding to some of the other girls, and making eye contact with Maxon, who was sitting beside his mother. He winked at me playfully, and I put a hand over my mouth to cover my grin.
Then my ear started to itch again. I cursed my luck under my breath, and quickly looked away from Maxon. Shoot. Shoot, shoot, shoot. What could I do? I couldn't itch my ear- Maxon would think I was signaling him.
I looked around nervously, then turned to Marlee. Maybe conversation would distract me.
"Hey, Marlee!" I greeted. My ear felt like it was on fire.
"Goodmorning, America." She politely greeted back. "I love your dress."
I looked down at myself. I hadn't even paid attention to what the girls had put on my this morning. It was a ronin's egg blue dress which was tight at the top with detailed stitching and halter straps, and the skirt flowed out from the hips and had white polkadots that faded to the bottom. It was pretty cute.
"Thanks, Marlee. I like yours, too!"
She beamed at me. And mu ear started up again. I swore under my breath, and Marlee looked at me quizzically.
"What's wrong?" She asked. I waved her question away with my hand. "It's nothing, don't worry about it."
I snuck a glance at Maxon, who was listening to something that his father was telling him with a polite face. He his it well, but I could tell he was bored. He caught me looking at him, and grinned. I looked away again.
Gosh, why did my ear have to itch so bad? Why did that mosquito have to bite me in the ear for heavens sake? I couldn't take it any longer!
Quick as a flash, i reached up to my ear, and gave it a good couple of scratches, before putting my hand bak in my lap, as if nothing had happened.
I looked up at Maxon to make sure he hadn't seen, but, to my dismay, he tugged his ear back.
I groan, and put my hand over my face. Wonderful.
