Once Emmett and Rosalie released me, I only yelled at them to let me be.
"I just want to go," I hissed at them.
I took off in a straight line through the masses of trees.
The scent still hung in my memory. Bella slitting her finger on the paper, Edward knocking me out of the way, Bella crashing into the table and onto the floor. The ruby red drop that had slid from her cut was still imprinted on my brain. Eventually, when I was far enough out, I scaled up a tall oak and sat on a think branch. Just like a child hiding in his tree house.
I was too much of a coward to turn back anytime soon, but of course they would send someone after me. Sure enough, I could soon hear my pursuer and, from the speed, it was sure to be Edward.
"Jasper," he whispered as he took his place next to me on the branch.
"What?" I snapped. There was nothing he could say.
"I know there's not. Just, come back. The longer you stay the more it will upset Alice."
I glanced up at him. Alice. I couldn't just leave her there to worry. Of course, I'd have to face it all when I got back.
"Come home, Jasper."
I shook my head, but he knew that I was going to give in soon. I couldn't fight him. Because I knew that he knew exactly how this would have to be dealt with. I could feel it in his emotions, and I wasn't stupid.
"She won't hold you responsible, you know," Edward whispered. "You know Bella would never do that. Now I have to get back so I can take care of her."
And he rocketed off back the way he'd come. I waited until my thoughts would be out of earshot until I let it cross my mind.
She won't hold me responsible for this, but she will hold you responsible for what you're going to do.
