A/N: I own nothing you recognize.

"If you were just an ordinary man, leading an ordinary life, I would love you just the same!" she insisted, staring at him with an intensity she saved only for Superman. He felt his heart beating wildly in his chest and could hear hers keeping time along with it. Here- this was the confession of love he'd been waiting for, but she chose to make it to the wrong man. He sighed and ducked his head so she wouldn't see the hurt in his eyes.

"Lois - I wish that I could believe you, but under the circumstances - I don't see how I can." She dropped her eyes and he turned to go. She caught him before he made it out the window.

"Why?" she asked quietly. Her eyes began to fill with tears and his heart clenched at the thought of what he had to do. He thought for a moment, wondering what answer he could truly give. Thinking he wasn't going to answer, she continued, "Why can't you believe me? I would never lie to you."

"You wouldn't lie on purpose, Lois," he interrupted her, "But you don't know what you're talking about. It's not true, Lois, no matter how much you wish it were."

"What do you mean, I don't know what I'm talking about? They're my feelings - I think I would know!" she exclaimed. Clark bit back a smile. This was the Lois he loved.

"I wouldn't presume to know your feelings better than you do, Lois," he said in a calming voice, "But you don't have all the facts-"

"Oh, and you do? Fine. Share. You tell me the facts and I'll prove that you're wrong!"

"Lois, I can't do that, you know that!"

"What, you can't let me win? Yeah, that's real justice." She whipped around and strode into the kitchen. She ripped open a drawer and pulled out a spoon, then dove into the freezer looking for some Rocky Road.

"Lois, I want to tell you, I do, but I can't tell you everything and you know it."

"I'm not asking you to tell me everything! Just the bits that prove, to you, that I'm not in love with you. Be reasonable, Clark!" He froze. How in the world did she - ?

"I - I mean Superman," she stuttered. There was a strange look on her face, but it passed quickly.

"I'm sorry," she said in a calmer tone, "Clark is the only person I've argued like that with before. I didn't mean to -" Clark relaxed.

"It's ok, Lois," he reassured her. Placing his hands on her shoulders he said softly, "I have to leave now. Goodbye." He reached up to touch her face and she closed her eyes, leaning into his hand. By the time she reopened her eyes, he was gone.
