Cat
"Why?" Happy questioned her husband.
"It will teach you to be a loving mother." Toby reasoned.
"Instincts do the same thing, Babe."
"It is not the same as actually caring for a little life."
Toby and Happy were in their new house that they had been living in for 2 months. They had been actively trying to get pregnant for 4 months and found the house of their dreams within 1 month. The married couple stood in their living room standing in front of each other. Toby was holding a 10 week old kitten that was grey and fit in one hand.
"Where the hell did you even find him?" Happy wanted this to be a screaming fight but the newborn kitten was sleeping and trusted everyone that was around it because it didn't know the cruel world well yet. Happy liked when they had screaming fights because one way or another they would end up having rough, angry, and mind blowing sex.
"Happy, he was in a basket outside of an abandoned building across from where I went to pick up dinner from our favorite pizza place. He was alone and the sign by the basket said take or its trash and he was alone, Babe, I had too save him."
"Okay we can keep him, but what do we feed it? Kittens need more nutrients."
"There is a thing called kitten food, like they have for human babies."
"Okay… Name. What do we name it?"
"I would name it but you wouldn't like it."
"If this is our crash training session in parenting then we do this together."
They sat in bed and cuddled up together. The kitten in Toby's hand while Happy had her head on his chest.
"Carol?"
"No"
"Baby, you are so negative."
"More picky and when I hear the right name then I won't be as picky."
"Kevin?"
"No"
"Um… Puff?"
"Not the worst."
"Jax?"
"Hell No?!" Happy said, tensioning and shooting upright. She started to hyperventilate.
"Whoa!" Toby sat up sitting the kitten on his night stand knowing it wouldn't move. He pulled his wife into his arms and hugging her tightly. "What just happened? Why does that name scar you so much?" Toby questioned.
"An old boyfriend…" Happy tried to say before falling into tears against his shoulder.
"You don't have to tell me. That says enough. Bad memories." Toby held her till she pulled back wiping her face. Then the baby kitten started to meow, a cats way of crying, and Toby leaned over picking it up.
They went out together with Happy holding the kitten. They bought everything that they would need to raise the kitten. On the way home Happy drove and Toby fed the kitten, kitten formula. Once home they laid the kitten down in the little bed they bought him.
"Hey how about Meriwether?"
"If we do does that mean you will forget about naming our Human baby Meriwether."
"Really?!"
"What about Teddy Meriwether Curtis?"
"I like it." Toby presses a kiss to her head.
"We call him Teddy now"
The cat was walking around and explored. Happy watched it. It did need a home. Teddy was like her. He was abandoned and just wanted to be safe and alive. To have a home that you wanted to be at. Toby gave it all to her and more. How could she stop him from helping this little kitty too. She loved cats, dogs were to noisy and many of the abusive homes had dogs attack her. She still had that scar on her back that scared Toby their first night together. Teddy would be good for them.
