Yuuki Kuran sipped from her wine glass as she stared across the dinner table at her lover. The table had been cleaned from the meal he had prepared; now, it seemed they were trapped in this loaded silence. Yuuki could practically feel the words she wanted to say forming on her tongue; every single sentence seemed to start with "don't."

Don't do this.

Don't go.

Don't leave me alone.

She wanted more than just these few hours. Why, she wondered not for the first time that evening, had they waited so long? Why had he not come for her, to her? Why did he have to take everything on himself? Why couldn't he just stay with her?

These questions burned inside of her, but she knew the answers would just dampen their night. Voicing them would lead to an argument that would resolve nothing. He was set in his decision; and she, hers. Either way, before the evening sun set tomorrow, one of them would lose the other. More than anything, she wished it weren't so. She wished he was not so stubborn. She didn't care for a world that did not have him in it, so why was he so set on forcing it upon her? For humanity's sake? If it meant keeping him, damn them all!

"Yuuki?" Her head snapped up at the sound of his voice. A rush of fear filled her as she realized he had moved without her noticing. He had gone from her sight, even if only for a moment. She felt the tremor in her hands and set her now warmed drink down on the table. Kaname held his hand out to her, palm up, in a quiet beckon for her to join him. She stood and slipped her hand in hers. She could not stop the tremble; and she knew that he had felt them too. Yet, Yuuki didn't bother to hide them; and he did not shield her from the somber darkness that filled his eyes.

Tonight, they would be honest with one another in a way they never had been before. Tonight, she would hide nothing from him nor would he from her.

Kaname led her into the main living room where the record player sang notes of love and sadness throughout the room. She felt his other hand circle her waist in a gentle touch. Guided by his hand, she stepped closer to him.

"Dance with me?" he quietly asked. His face shielded from her as he rested his cheek on her hair. Tears stung her eyes.

"Of course," she consented. He led her tenderly into a soft sway across the living room floor. Kaname's cheek only lifted from her head to allow her to tuck closer to his chest. Her head fit snugly into the crook of his neck and shoulder. He held her tighter.

Slowly, as the first song began to fade, Kaname pulled back from her. Her heart clenched at the look on his face. She had never seen him so close to tears. A quiet whimper of pain and regret escaped the back of her throat. The look was all it took for her own battle with tears to end. They spilled down her cheeks.

Her lips parted. One of the questions she so desperately wanted to ask threatened to leave her tongue, but the words were blocked by his lips.

In his kiss, she felt his sorrow and it broke her heart all the more. He swept her up in his arms; his mouth only leaving hers long enough for the shift of her body from the floor to his arms to be completed; and carried her back upstairs where thoughts of sorrow and the sad partings of tomorrow had no place.
