DISCLAIMER: I do not own Merry or Pippin or the Shire.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: I do not normally write things like this. Sometimes I feel like it, though. Strange as that is for me. Anyway, I also think it would be nice to have a story about Merry and Pippin that isn't slash.

Nine year old Pippin Took was laying on the ground, staring at the stars. Next to him, he could hear his cousin Merry breathing. Pippin looked over at his cousin, seeing that his eyes were closed and he was almost asleep.

Pippin rolled over and tried to do the same. However, the instant he closed his eyes, he heard a small and disturbing sound, like a twig breaking, and opened his eyes.

"Merry!" he whispered.

"What?" The other asked groggily.

"I think we're being watched."

"No we aren't, Pippin. Go to sleep."

Pippin again rolled over. He thought he noticed a small movement in the trees not far away.

"Merry!"

"What?" His cousin sounded irritated now.

"I think something is in the trees!"

"Probably just a fox. Nothing to worry about, Pip."

"No, it was bigger than a fox! Much bigger!"

Merry rolled his eyes. He wondered for a moment why he had invited Pippin along on this over night camping trip with him and his older, more mature friends. Merry cast a quick glance at the sleeping forms of Frodo and Fatty before looking back at Pippin.

"Merry, I'm scared." Pippin said, and Merry felt suddenly sympathetic for the boy.

"Pippin, there isn't anything to be afraid of. We are in the Shire. You're safe."

"What if the giant fox gets me?"

"He won't."

"Why? He's big and I'm little. He can swallow me without chewing."

"Nah, Pippin. He wouldn't get you."

"Why not?"

"Because I'll be protecting you. I won't let the fox get you, or anything else."

Pippin smiled a very large smile, and curled up next to Merry.

"You promise?" Pippin asked as Merry placed his arms around the young Hobbit.

"Yes. Always, Pippin. I'll never let anything get you."
