Gilbert Nightray did not have a family.
Now don't get me wrong. Sure he had parents, but parents who abandoned their children could not truly be called part of their "family". And if you take them out of the equation all you get is Gilbert and Vincent.
Two people by themselves cannot be considered a family.

When Jack Vessalius found Gilbert and his brother and brought them to the Baskervilles, he thought they might be considered his family. Sure they weren't the typical kind that consisted of a mother, father, and their children, but they were his nonetheless. His crazy, dysfunctional family.
But sadly, they disappeared too, and he was once again without a family. Only this time, he didn't have his brother either.

Years later, he was once again taken in by a Vessalius. Only this time it was by Oscar and Oz Vessalius. With no memory of his past failures they instantly became his family. And one he would protect no matter what, because he had become part of their family too.
Which is why, in order to get that family back, he left them and joined the Nightrays.

When Gilbert became a Nightray he was reunited with his brother. But that did not mean he considered the Nightrays his family. Sure he cared for Vincent and Elliot but his other siblings didn't care for him. And so the Vessaliuses still remained his true family.
Secretly, he later added Vincent and Elliot to his growing list of family members.

When Oz escaped from the abyss Gilbert was extremely happy for two reasons. One, his master was back safe and sound. Two, his family was once again complete.
They were never the typical family and they never would be. Because typical didn't suit Gilbert and he wouldn't have it any other way. They were his family and he would do anything for them.
