Kotoko lay wide eyed on the bed as she listened to the rain pour down. The lightning flashed, causing her to clench her eyes shut as she waited. As soon as the thunder cracked, her hands griped the covers tighter, pulling them closer to her chest, and her eyes snapped back open.

Yes, there she was, completely frightened out of her wits, watching her husband sleep as soundly as a rock. She had never envied him more than in that moment. How was it possible for him to sleep through such impossible weather? The rain seemed as relentless as ever and she could hear it come down in washes. Another particularly large crack came which caused the frame of the house to creak. Her heart refused to calm down and her frazzled nerves had yet to settle. The only sort of comfort she could take in was the view of her husband's back.

Another burst of thunder cracked and it vaguely reminded her of shattering glass. Her wide eyes continued to stare at his back until her gaze turned into longing. She wanted to press herself to his side and feel his warmth. His heartbeat, she imagined, would fill her ears and soothe her incredibly frazzled nerves. The idea became more appealing by the second, but she continued to restrain herself from doing so.

Until she asked herself a question that had never really occurred to her before. Why not? She was married to him, she loved him, and he had claimed that he loved her as well. A little hug shouldn't upset him.

Still, flashes of past occurrences flashed through her mind's eye and kept her at bay. It was almost torture thinking about how close he was and she began thinking of which she feared more: the storm outside or the possible rejection of her own husband.

Another round of flash and rumble came around, but all Kotoko could do was pull the sheets over her head and wait. Sleep would take her eventually, though no one promised she wouldn't be exhausted the next morning.

Suddenly, she heard noise coming from beside her and her breathing stopped cold. The rustling paused a second or two before it resumed and it was obvious that her husband was stirring. Another bout of rustling later and suddenly the covers were pulled from her sight, leaving her Naoki's face as the only thing in it.

"What are you doing?" He asked in a voice that was a mix of groggy and scratchy. Yet somehow he still managed his usual blunt manner of question, his no-nonsense way of interrogation.

She could feel her cheeks heat up, embarrassed to have been found out, but she answered back clearly and defensively. "Can't sleep. Too... Loud." More like too scary, but she didn't need him thinking that she was a baby.

He sighed heavily through his nose and closed his eyes before resting himself next to her again, only this time facing her. Her eyes stayed on his face until suddenly his arms were around her and pulling her towards him. Her hands caught herself on his chest as he briefly tugged before she heard a gruff whisper. "Go to sleep."

Her eyes grew wide, but when she looked up she was even more surprised to find a healthy red glow on his face along with a slight twitch to his brow. She didn't comment, only smiled at the endearing act before tilting her head onto his chest, where she was comfortably settled and ready to sleep.

"Un," she agreed. The warmth and comfort of his embrace soothed her, and she quickly drifted off, his arms enveloping her and his heartbeat lulling her to sleep.
