Weiss sat in his office on his computer typing up a report on his latest case.
Vaughn huffed in, "Why did you do it?"
Weiss looked up, "Do what?"
"I saw the reports on me that were sent to Devlin. You gave them to him. You told him everything I told you in confidence. What the hell were you doing?"
"You shouldn't have access to those reports." Weiss said neutrally.
"What, you're gonna report me for that too?" Vaughn snorted in reply.
"You shouldn't be on the Bristow case because you are entirely too emotionally involved Vaughn. I'm your friend. If you think about it, you might just see that I'm trying to do what's best for everyone. It's better for the Agency if she has a neutral handler . . ."
"Like Lambert?" Vaughn asked sarcastically.
Weiss ignored him, continuing, "It's better for you, because you know how dangerous her job is . . ."
"You gave me your word . . ." Vaughn trailed off.
"And like it or not Vaughn, I'm doing what I think is best. Your attachment to her bothers me. I'm not saying you shouldn't care . . . but you're falling in love with her. And what happens when you both decide to act on your feelings? You endanger yourselves, the job, the Agency, everything you've worked for . . ."
"And that's my choice, Eric, not yours . . ."
"Vaughn, when it affects the Agency it becomes everyone's business. I'm really sorry man. I really am."
"Is this about the promotion I got early because of her? I know some people are upset about that . . ."
Weiss sighed, "Mike, I'm not after your job. I don't want your job, to be perfectly honest. And I really resent the fact that you would accuse me of doing this out of spite or self-interest. I would have thought that you knew me better than that."
"I would have thought I knew you well enough to know that you'd keep your word." Vaughn snapped angrily. "How can I possibly trust you again?"
"You do realize how much this case means to me . . ."
"I know." Weiss said, "And believe me, this was one of the hardest decisions I had to make. I'm sorry."
"So am I." Vaughn's voice was as cold as steel. He turned, walked out, slamming the door as he went.
Weiss sighed again. He had only done what he thought was best . . . maybe he'd made a mistake, but . . . He hated losing Vaughn's friendship over this . . . but Vaughn had become blind to the risks and that wasn't good . . . actually, it was downright dangerous. And he didn't want his friend to get hurt . . .
