Phone Call
Henry sits in his room and watches as the clock changes from 11:59 to midnight. There's no real reason he had decided to stay up this late, he just felt like he needed to.
At 12:01, when Henry considers going to sleep, his phone rings. It's Natalie. He doesn't know why she's calling him so late, but he answers the phone to find out. "Hi."
"Um…Henry?" Natalie's voice sounds small and nervous and un-Natalie-like.
"Hey, Natalie."
"You know what? Never mind." Natalie's voice sounds like her own now, all the nervousness dripping away.
"Wait, Nat," Henry protests, trying to stop her from hanging up so he can find out why she called. It's too late. He looks at the phone, considers calling her back. What if what she was calling about was really important?
He doesn't call. If Natalie wants to call back, she will.
So he waits.
And waits.
And waits.
All night.
She never calls back.
