Her dainty hand lay before him. He glared heatedly at the offensive appendage, and then up at her cheer-filled face. Noticing his glower, her smile faltered but her hand refused to budge.

"Why?" Gaara asked, obviously unhappy.

"Why what?" Sakura asked, confused. She pulled back her arm and let it relax against her side. She had started to get uncomfortable standing there with her arm outstretched for so long. It was humiliating as well, just standing there looking like an idiot. She couldn't understand what she had done to get Gaara in such a bad mood that he felt the need to reject her handshake.

"You wish to have the least possible contact with me. Why?"

"Wh-what?" Sakura sputtered, incredulously. Out of all the things he could have said, Sakura was sure that this was what she would have least expected! Kankurou and Temari, who had started to understand why Gaara was so agitated, started explaining, but Gaara's redirected glare silenced them immediately. He wanted to hear Sakura's reason, not his siblings'.

"Do you fear me, Sakura?" Gaara demanded.

"No, no! Of course not!" Sakura replied, getting flustered. What was she being interrogated for? They had just finished a difficult, time-consuming mission, and all she really wanted to do was get to Konoha immediately. She was already running a couple hours late. Her time away from Konoha was being prolonged unnecessarily. She did not have time for this!

"Then why?"

"I don't understand, Kazeka-"

"Gaara." He corrected.

"What?" Sakura asked, once again shocked speechless. What was going on with him all of a sudden? He rarely ever spoke to her up until now, and when she's about to depart for Konoha, no less. It didn't make any sense!

"Call me Gaara." The Kazekage replied, and with an afterthought he added, "Please."

"O-oh, okay, Gaara." She replied, although hesitantly. "But why are you-"

"You hugged Temari and Kankurou. Why won't you hug me as well?" He interrupted, and crossed his arms over his chest. His gaze was stern as he awaited her reaction.

Sakura's eyes widened, however instead of being shocked speechless, she started giggling uncontrollably.

Gaara's eyes narrowed, and he took a step towards her threateningly. His tall frame towered over her petite body, but she wasn't intimidated in the slightest. She was too busy caught up in her amusement to even notice the close proximity between them.

"Why, kunoichi, are you mocking me?" He questioned her angrily, a dangerous edge in his voice. The grains of sand in the surrounding area started to rise and circle around him in response to his growing fury.

"I'm not mocking you!" Sakura exclaimed in between giggles. "I'm just surprised. I would have never expected the reason you were upset with me was because I didn't hug you!"

Gaara hn'ed, which caused Sakura to burst into another fit of giggles. "You're so adorable, Gaara." Sakura boldly said, grinning up at him.

The sand fell back to the ground as Gaara turned away with a light blush forming on his cheeks.

Suddenly he felt her slender arms snake their way around his waist. He was so shocked, even the sand had not reacted to the unexpected contact. As if fully realizing his position, Gaara immediately became stiff, as if he had forgotten how to move.

Five seconds passed, Sakura's head buried into Gaara's chest.

"Well?" She asked, looking up at him with a mock-angry expression.

"Aren't you going to hug me back?"
