AU: This is my first story. So be nice!

Prologue

The windows rattled from the storm's rage. The wind's eerie howl added to a small family's fear. Outside rain pounded onto the cobbled streets. Four figures stood outside the house, waiting. A little boy, hardly older than five years olds, wiggled against his mother. He didn't understand why he wasn't allowed to move.

"Be still!" His mother whispered harshly to him. He settled down, huffing with annoyance. There was a loud bang upon the front door. "Open up!" A man's gruff voice called out over the wind's howling. The little boy's father slowly stood up from the floor. "No! Don't answer it, David!" The mother whispered, eyes wide and hugging the little boy closer to her side.

David looked down upon his wife and son. They were his life. He'd defend them no matter what they faced. He took a step forward to the front door and turned his back on his family. He wrenched the wooden door open. A gruesome face stared back at him. Scars covered nearly every inch of his face. A patch covered his left eye. David swallowed. "Yes?" He asked in a small voice.

"We are here to take the boys for the king's army. Hand over him right this instance!" David jumped back and slammed the door on the face of the stranger. "Marcia, run! Run far away!" He urgently called out to his wife. Marcia got up and stumbled to her son's room, holding her baby the whole way. She quickly packed a bag of necessaries. She picked up the bag and slung it over her other shoulder and ran down the hall to the back door.

The front door was kicked in, sending David flying into the opposite wall, smacking his head. Blood gushed out of his nose. Two men entered the house. They looked down at David. One of the two men pulled out a gun and pointed it at David. With wide eyes, David took his last breath. The trigger was pulled.

"We have the mother and son!" A voice called from the back. Marcia was dragged into the living room by her hair, crying along the way. Tears burst from her eyes as she took in the sight of her dead husband. "Daddy!" Her son cried out from the arms of one of the men.

'Why are they hurting Mommy and Daddy?' He wondered. 'Why is Daddy sleeping?'

Marcia struggled against the hard hands. "Let me do! What do you want?!" She cried. "Shut her up!" The man holding Marcia backslapped her across the face. Marcia quieted, but tears poured down her face like the rain outside. "Take the boy outside!" The man with the scars ordered. Two of the men left, holding the struggling boy tightly.

"Marcia, your son is going to be special. He is now the property of the great King Cressor. Any objections?" He asked grinning. "You sick, evil bast…" The man struck her. Marcia sobbed. "Shut up!" The other man said. He unsheathed his knife. The man with scars upon his face grabbed hold of his hand. "That's enough, Marc!" "Yes sir, Captain James!" He stuttered.

Marcia knew she could do nothing for her son. She hung her head in defeat. "T-take care of my baby." Captain James took that to heart. He ordered his men to move out.. "March out, men!"

Marcia didn't lift her head to see the men hit her son to render him unconscious. She didn't see them ride out into the dark night, leaving mass destruction behind. She didn't see many years from now a cold-hearted young man. She didn't see him being sucked into the In-between. She didn't see his life slowing ebbing away little by little. She didn't see anything.
