Chapter 1: Rumor Has It

Light brown eyes stared at the laptop screen in earnest while her friends chattered around the table, talking about the new upcoming doll contest. It was one of the biggest competition in the doll community and they were adamant about entering. This would be the chance for them to show what they're made of, the chance to show their skills.

Takuma, the sole heir of the famous Ichijou family, was the first who presented this idea. He chose to do what he likes and pursued his passion before he had to put on the mantle passed down to him, which was making toys. Next to him sat Senri Shiki and his girlfriend, Rima Toya, both specialized in making doll ornaments. In front of them was Aidou Hanabusa, Takuma's childhood friend, who just came back from studying abroad and also a professional photographer.

"Ah. The Bloody Doll is up for auction again." Takuma said, his eyes not leaving his laptop screen.

The brown haired girl sitting next to Aidou perked up, staring at Takuma's laptop in interest. Yuuki Cross, the last member of the band, was the daughter of Kaien Cross, the headmaster of the prestigious Cross Academy. A girl with skillful, deft hands. Her father noticed her talent and enrolled her in one of the most famous designer school. She had made a name of her own, whether it was making clothes for dolls or even real people, she was an absolutely talented seamstress.

Aidou leaned closer to Takuma's laptop. "Again? This is, what, the fifth time this month?"

"Bloody Doll? What's that?"

Everyone stared at Yuuki like she just made a horrible joke. Aidou took it upon himself to explain. "The Bloody Doll, Yuuki, is a doll that said to attack their owners and drink their blood."

Yuuki scrunched her eyebrows. "Like a vampire?" Aidou nodded. "That's ridiculous!"

"Agreed," Takuma sighed. "But people always ended up selling it again and it's happened numerous times. Of course people would think there's something wrong with that doll."

"Some even said that it's possessed by a demon, cursed forever inside the doll." Shiki added flatly.

"Thanks for that, Shiki."

Yuuki shook her head. "That's just stupid. We don't have to believe them."

Takuma smiled at Yuuki's fervent words, leaning back to allow Shiki to lean closer on his laptop. Shiki's unblinking grey eyes stared impassively at the screen before he said, "Huh. At least they got one rumor true."

"What? Which rumor?"

"They said the doll is one of the prettiest doll. I have to agree."

"Really?" Yuuki leaned closer in interest, grabbing Takuma's laptop. "What does it look like?"

She nudged her own laptop away to make room for Takuma's and her mouth opened in awe when she saw the screen.

The thing she imagined being called the Bloody Doll was nothing like she expected. It was very beautiful and she could tell that whoever made it, made it with love.

Its size was small, a bit shorter than her forearm, and had messy dark hair that looked soft to the touch. His eyes were a set of mellow garnet orbs and they were lovely. But it was the doll's smile that seemed out of place. It was a smile, yes, but shaped as if to create a sad expression. If she was a toy maker, she'd make her dolls look happy.

"So, this is the Bloody Doll that people's been fussing about?" Everyone nodded. "It's so pretty!"

Takuma laughed. "I knew you'd say that!"

Rima, who had been silent since she arrived, finally spoke. "You really should get your own doll, Yuuki-chan. You've been making lots of clothes but you don't have one." She tore open a pocky package and bit into one, offering each person to grab a stick. "Who knows, it might motivate you to make more clothes."

"But I have your doll and Takuma's to dress up."

"You've made enough clothes for us. It won't be a problem if you have another."

Yuuki propped her chin on the palm of her hand, nibbling her pocky in thought. The idea of having her own doll had popped into her head a couple of times before but she didn't want to waste money since most dolls were expensive.

But she did saved up to buy the right doll and this one seemed promising.

"Is this Bloody Doll expensive?" She finally asked. All heads turned away as she clicked around the web.

Aidou looked at Yuuki, knowing that determined look. "Yuuki, you better not involve yourself in this—"

She waved his concern away. "I don't believe in rumors, Aidou." She stared back at the screen with a big smile as her eyes gazed at the lovely doll. Oh, very promising indeed. "I will buy him."
