He wasn't sure what had happened. One moment, he was flying the plane, listening to Face brag about the girl he was taking out for Valentine's Day. The next moment, he was moaning in pain as he regained consciousness. He felt a hand stroke his face.
"It's alright, buddy. Come on, wake up."
Murdock forced his eyes open and looked up at Face. "What, happened?"
"We lost the engine, remember?"
Murdock tried to sit up, but was forced back down by a wave of nausea. "Where's Hann'bal 'n BA?"
"They went to find something to drive to the hospital. You took one major bump on the head, pal."
Murdock was silent, looking around the crashed plane. "Sun's goin' down," he slurred.
"Yeah."
"I'm sorry."
"Sorry? For what?"
"I made you miss your Valentines date."
"Hey Murdock, Valentine's Day is for spending time with people you care about. You fit the bill perfectly."
Murdock gave a half grin. "Aw, Facey." He started to doze off.
"Murdock, you need to stay awake." Face gently patted Murdock's arm.
Eyes popping open, Murdock blurted, "Handkerchief!"
"What?" Face chuckled.
Murdock looked up at him and explained, "I got you a Valentine present. It's a handkerchief and tie that matches that new suit you bought last week."
"Gee, Murdock. Thanks." Seeing that Murdock was dozing off again, Face asked, "Did you get something for Hannibal?"
"Sure did." Murdock forced his eyes back open. "I got him a pen. It's a special pen that will write on absolutely anything, anytime, anywhere. 'Cuz, with Hannibal's plans, ya never know where he'll be."
"Good thinking. What about BA?"
"Got somethin' fer him, too." Murdock blinked, trying to make his eyes focus. "Mitt."
"What?"
"Got the big mudsucker a new baseball mitt. The one he uses with the kids is gettin' worn out."
Face rubbed Murdock's arm to help the pilot stay awake. "I feel really bad, Murdock. I didn't get a gift for you."
"I know. You had planned to spend the evening with someone 'lot cuter than me!" Murdock halfway succeeded at fluttering his eyes.
"Kimmy is just a ship passing in the night. You're my best friend."
"I thought you said her name was Tammy?"
Face thought off a moment. "It's one of those." Murdock smiled. "I wouldn't even know what to get for you," Face sighed.
"That's the fun of Valentine gifts, you don't pick them out, they pick themselves out!"
"How do they do that?"
"When you go in a store, you think of the person you wanna give somethin' to, then you look around until something screams 'It's me!' Valentines are the easiest gifts." His eyes started to close again. "Facey, I'm really tired."
"I know, but you've got to stay awake." Face looked out the window. "Look, Murdock! Here they come!"
"You look. I wanna sleep."
"Come on! Stay awake just a little longer!"
Hannibal and BA gently carried Murdock to the back seat of their borrowed car. Face got in the back, too, holding Murdock's head on his lap. As BA sped off towards the hospital, Face tried to keep Murdock awake. He talked about anything he could think of, even sang a few songs, to BA's dismay. After they reached the hospital, Hannibal, Face, and BA followed the stretcher Murdock was on until the doctor told them stay in the waiting room. Hannibal and BA paced around the waiting room, while Face headed to the gift shop. He felt kind of silly, but he thought of Murdock and looked around the shop. Then he saw it. He smiled as he imagined it jumping up and shouting 'It's me!' It was the perfect Valentines gift for Murdock!
Murdock moved his arm and felt it brush against something. When he opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was a sky blue teddy bear holding a model airplane. He smiled at the bear sitting on his chest and hugged it tight. "You're from Faceman. You're the bestest Valentine gift ever!" Standing in the doorway with Hannibal and BA, Face smiled, too.
