"I will lie for you. I will say whatever you want me to say. But I need you to tell me what the hell is going on."
It came out of her mouth before she realized she was saying it. 'I will lie for you'. She may not have expected it, but it was the truth. She's always considered herself one of the good guys, a good cop, not one to fuck with the system, but here they were and what do you know, love has proven her wrong.
Because it was love, she knew that. The minute she had screamed over what she thought to be Walt's body, she knew. And Sean knew as well. If he hadn't known then he certainly knew it when she abandoned him to go back for Walt.
He was her best friend. That had made it confusing at first. Once, while she was still working out what hold Walt had over her, she had asked a friend back in Philly what the difference between best friends and lovers really was. "Oh not much Vic, besides wanting to sleep with them."
And boy howdy, she thought to herself with a laugh, did she ever want to sleep with Walt. Sleep with him, kiss him, touch him, whatever. She wasn't in a position to be picky at the moment. Anything to tether him to her would do, because she was afraid. Afraid of losing him again, afraid he was going to get lost in his need for revenge. Afraid that she would never have a chance.
So when she said 'I will lie for you', she really meant 'I love you'.
"I will lie for you."
He must have heard her wrong. That was the only explanation. Vic Moretti, on the run from turning in bad seed colleagues in Philadelphia was a good cop. She didn't so much toe the line as she drew it in the sand. Here and no further. He could not conceive of her being willing to cross that line, not for him.
"I will say whatever you want me to say, but I need you to tell me what's going on."
So there it was. This was as close to the truth laid bare as they had ever come. He should have known she'd be the first to make that step. Vic had always had more courage than he did. He loved her for it. He could admit it to himself occasionally. It didn't take away from his need to avenge Martha's death, and Vic was a hell of a woman if she could care for him and still want to help him with his love for another.
But he can't let her tarnish her career. Not for him. He's too far gone to be anything for her right now, and who knows where this road will take him. She's young enough that she can find someone else, and he's too old to start anew, despite all of Henry's talk of second chances.
So while his lips said 'I can't let you do that' his heart said 'I love you, too'
