The room seemed to jump to life as the window was opened. The light seemed to dance into the empty space in streams of glitter, bouncing off the lone object that occupied the room; a couch. He turned from the window, and stared at the object. His eyes then scanned the room for a remainder of the life that once was. A small smile crept onto his lips as he allowed countless memories to flood into the room along with the soft sunlight.
He planted himself onto the soft, worn leather couch and turned towards the window. He softly kicked his legs up onto the armrest and neatly folded his hands on his stomach. A soft sigh escaped his lips. Her smell still lingered in the room after all these years. Smiling, he exhaled.
His eyes soon traveled towards the window as he started to hum. His smile was quickly filled with sadness as he thought of how often she would hum this tune. Noticing that his eyes had strayed from the window, he peered back out. The clouds scattered the sky, engulfing the sun in their fullness. The sun smiled down at him, close to being set. It was still as bright through this window as he remembered.
As he sat there during the many hours of the night, he imagined her beside him. He hummed her simple tune many times that night, and began it again. During that time he remembered how she would sip on a glass of lemonade as they watched TV after a long days work, and how she would smile up at him. He imagined her black hair, and her violet eyes. He remembered everything.
As the familiar song disappeared with the night, he walked out the door; leaving the memories of his lost love with the dust-covered floor of their old apartment.
He sped up his pace as he picked out a dark head of hair in the crowd. Disbelief in his eyes, he raced towards her. Then he stopped and stared, wide-eyed, as she talked with a friend he did not recognize. He remembered her voice, her smile, her smell. He remembered everything.
"Rukia," He reached for her and silently repeated her name. She turned as his fingers wrapped around her wrist.
"Who are you?" Her innocent voice rang through his ears and pierced his heart. He peered into her eyes, hoping the see into her heart. His eyes dropped to the ground as they did many years ago.
"Sorry…" He mumbled before dropping her hand. His fingers brushed her familiar arm as he watched it slowly return to her side. Mesmerized, He watched as she once again blended with the crowd.
It wasn't her. It would never be her. She had long left this world.
He walked back the way he came, buying a few lemons on the way. When he arrived, He walked into the old kitchen and grabbed a glass. After adding too much sugar to the cup of lemon juice, he made his way back to the window. He watched as the clouds rolled lazily across the bright blue sky. With a sigh, her song once again filled the air around him. Content, he returned to the couch and rested his head on the armrest. The song faded as he allowed himself to fall asleep. He dreamed of her.
It was then that he realized she would only be in his heart. Forever.
