Author Notes – My first fic ever, please read and review. Don't flame me or this story. I'm doing this for fun and its not really hurting anyone is it? Don't like, don't read is what I always say! I love Draco/Hermione and Harry/Ginny and wanted to see what it might be like if they were American teens in a regular American high school with no magic. I have a good plot all figured out and I hope you enjoy it. If you review my story I will leave a nice review on one of your fics as a thank you.

Young Hearts

Hermione got the book she needed out of her locker and tried to ignore the noise down the hall as she shut the metal door.

"I don't care who your father is, Mr Malfoy!" said Ms McGonagall, one of the strictest but fairest teachers at Hogwarts High. "If you break the rules you get punished the same as anyone else. Vandalising school property has just earned you six weeks worth of after school detentions and you will come in here early tomorrow morning to clean the spray paint off Neville Longbottom's locker. Is that clear?"

"He deserved it," Draco muttered, folding his arms and leaning against the row of lockers.

"Oh, really?" scoffed McGonagall. "I'm sure his grandmother will disagree with you. Just for that, you can write a handwritten apology to her for harassing her grandson. We do not tolerate bullying at Hogwarts. Now go to class, I'm sick of the sight of you!"

McGonagall walked off down the hall and disappeared into one of the classrooms. Hermione sighed as Draco scowled angrily, but didn't leave like he'd been told.

"Why do you pick on Neville so much?" Hermione asked as she walked passed him. She usually tried not to talk to Draco. He was one of the school bad boy's and her parents had warned her to stay away from him. But his treatment of Neville upset her and she felt the need to stand up for her friend, who was a nice boy with a good heart even if he was clumsy and forgetful and always scared of something.

"Why do you care?" snorted Draco, rolling his eyes at her like she was dumb for asking.

"Because it's not right," said Hermione. "Neville's a nice kid. Leave him alone."

"Or you'll what?" challenged Draco, glaring at her. She shivered at the deadly look in his steel gray orbs. Her parents were right. He was dangerous and someone to stay away from.

"I'm late for class," said Hermione. She hurried away down the hall, not wanting to be near Draco Malfoy. Something about him made her nervous but if she admitted it to herself, he had something that excited her as well. It wasn't just that he was good looking. There was something about him that drew her in even though he angered her and she didn't agree with his bad boy behaviour. She tried not to look back at him as she turned a corner.

Draco stared after Hermione as she disappeared. He smirked. She fancied him all right. But who didn't? He was the best looking boy in school.

He had noticed Hermione before. Her bushy hair was annoying and she had funny teeth but he could see that there was a beautiful girl lurking underneath.

Though he would never be able to go out with her. They were from different worlds. He dated Pansy Parkinson anyway. He was taken. But it was fun to imagine what a challenge it would be to get Hermione to go out with him. He always liked a challenge. But he couldn't really do anything about it, so Draco went to class. Maybe he wouldn't sleep through the lesson this time.
