Everybody Loves a Good Scandal

The word would be out by now, she thought with a twisted smile as she noted two nurses muttering together in a corner of the infirmary. From the hushed, conspiratorial voices and the sneaked glances in her direction, Doctor Holly Simpson knew exactly what they were talking about. The rumour mill would run wild; after all, everybody loved a scandal!
Quickly excusing herself once Doctor Beckett had returned with her test results (she neither needed nor wanted any words of comfort, warning or congratulations) she returned to the safety of her lab, hoping to find a safe refuge from the stares and whispering she met with in the corridors of the city.
But even in the labs there was no peace. No rest for the wicked, Holly mused to herself, raising an eyebrow at the irony of it all. Muted voices discussing things that had nothing to do with the device they were working on, e-mail signals coming from laptops with alarming regularity, the receivers shooting her looks before beginning to type a response...and the never ending looks of disgust, curiosity and half wonder. Miko gave her a soft, sad smile from the other end of the lab before coming forward to place a comforting hand on her shoulder and a steaming mug of coffee on her desk.
Finally as night fell over the city, people began to retire to bed and she at last found some peace. Wandering the halls, marvelling at how good it was to be alone and not a one woman show, she headed to his quarters. Letting herself in with the code he gave her long ago, she sank into the arms of a man none thought anyone could care about or love. She sighed happily, placed a kiss on his cheek and gave his ponytail a playful flick.
As he began to murmur soft words of reassurance and comfort, so dissimilar to his usual everyday arrogant manner, she let herself believe in the man whom she had once hated and now loved. Maybe things would workout okay for her…for him…for them…for the city…and for their unborn child that all of Atlantis now knew about.
