"Link..." A single teardrop ran down her face, then fell into the air. Instead of splattering onto the dusty ground beneath it, it hung suspending in space. "I..." She bit back her words and tried not to cry anymore. She gently cradled the tear and pushed it toward the mirror that had caused all this. "See you later..."
The tear struck the perfect surface of the mirror and sent cracks throughout it. Zelda and Link gasped in horror as the flawless glass began to break apart. They looked back to Midna and found she was already dissolving into the twilight. Then she was gone. The Mirror of Twilight shattered, leaving two Hylians staring at the gigantic black slab that had been the portal to the twilit world.
Zelda sank to her knees in disbelief and numbly gazed at the place where the Twilight Princess had been standing. The realization hit her: Midna was gone for good. She buried her face in her hands, and the sobs racking her body could be heard throughout the desert.
Link merely stood stiffly for a moment, then stumbled to one of the walls surrounding the pedestal where the mirror was kept. He bowed his head and leaned against the wall, willing its sturdiness and strength to be his own. A few minutes passed until he straightened and walked over to Zelda.
"Princess," he whispered and placed his hands on her shoulders. She flinched, then looked up into his tight face. "We need to go. They are waiting for us."
He gingerly helped her up and supported her down the many flights of stairs. When they finally reached the sunlight, he looked up at the tower where they had just been. One solitary tear escaped his weary eyes.
"See you later... Midna..."
