A New Life
Part 1
How had he let things turn out like this? How could he let her go? How could he have just walked away? How could he have let go of the love of his life? And here he was, reading her invitation to her wedding. July 27, 2003. In one year, Rory would be married. Lorelai Gilmore and Christopher Hayden request the honor of your presence at the marriage of Robert Matthews to Lorelai Gilmore. He knew who Robert was. He was a friend of his. Ironically, he had introduced Robert to Rory. She must have turned to him for comfort or maybe they had always liked each other.
He remembered that day like it was yesterday. They had a huge fight over…he didn't even remember what it was about. It was something stupid. Maybe it wasn't at that moment, but thinking back it wasn't worth it to lose her. He had walked out on her. Not the other way around, she tried to stop him. But he was so angry and upset, he wouldn't give in. He couldn't let her win. That was how stubborn he was. He couldn't just lose. He had come back the next day to retrieve his stuff. It was all packed up in a box and inside the apartment near the door. She wasn't home; she probably was at work. He looked around the room and saw crumpled up tissue paper in the garbage can. He took the box, left the keys in the kitchen, and walked out of her life forever.
But she had still invited him to her wedding. He didn't even know why. Robert must have talked her into it. He had called her later that night to confirm his reservations. He couldn't just not go, if he wanted to expiate the things he had done to her, he had to go. He had to go. So he decided when he called her up that he would apologize and ask to be friends. He hoped she would want the same thing and she did. During that year they met up frequently, they had lunch, they had dinner, they had breakfast, and they had coffee. But they were still just friends. Being around her made him realize he wanted more, he realized what he missed out on. But she was happy and in love. He could see it in her eyes, laugh, gestures, smile, and soul. And that day finally came, Tristan was one of Robert's grooms men. He stood there with a fake, happy mask on. His outside had a happy appearance and on the inside his heart was breaking. I do they both said. He put on a fake smile and on the inside he wished he were the one standing at the altar, not Robert. The reception came and the couple had its first official dance. They looked like Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella and her prince charming, Anthony and Cleopatra. They fit together like two pieces in a jigsaw puzzle, they were like Ying and yang...they were perfect. And he knew everything was right, but to him they just didn't feel right. He saw her gaze into his eyes full of love and saw the same look mirrored in Robert's eyes. And while his heart was breaking, he was truly happy for her. After their dance he got up and was starting to leave. He walked out into the cool, night breeze and took a long breath. He heard his name being yelled and quick footsteps following. He turned around and it was Rory. She asked him where he was leaving so early and he made up a lie. He said he had to go to work tomorrow and work on a special project. He knew that she didn't believe him but she let it slip. She gave him a hug and a peck on the cheek. He congratulated her and wished her a happy life. They said their good-byes and once again he walked out of her life forever. He couldn't just be friends with her. He had to have her. He had to be with her. That night he packed up his stuff. The next day he asked for a transfer and moved as far away as possible. He didn't tell anyone and he left that week. He decided to start over with a clean slate. No Rory. He was going to try to pretend that she never existed and that they never existed. He would start a new life.
