I run. Fast. Directly away from the Cornucopia. The only thing I can hear is the sound of my pounding heart in my ears. It feels like my feet are just skimming the ground as I cross the terrain fastest than I can register. My face stings from the speed at which the cold air scraps my face. Then I feel it. It was only a matter of time before Cato would catch up with me. The pain makes me come to a halt and drop to me knees. "The girl on fire is about to be put out." He sneers.
"AHhhhhhhhhh!" I snap into consciousness- panting heavily, my vision clouded with tears. "shhhh shhhh" I feel something tighten around me. "shhh Katniss, you're okay". I remember I'm in Peeta's arms. This is the first night back in District 12 after returning from the Capitol after the games. The nightmare was as real as reality itself. Like I am still running for my life, like I'm still in the arena. Like I'm still in the Hunger Games. Well, I guess I am still in the games. Just like I will forever still be in the games. I try to wipe the tears from cheek but Peeta's already there. "It's okay Katniss," he says in that gentle, candy floss-soft voice he has. "I've got you". Peeta peppers kisses along the left side of my face. I tuck my head under his chin and try to steady my breathing.
"I'm sorry" I whisper. "Nightmares huh?" He questions. I nod against his chest."Do you want to talk about it?", "No." I say in a low voice.
"I get them too..." he pauses "I haven't felt safe closing my eyes in weeks because I feel like as soon as they open again, I'll be alone. You'll be gone. And I don't want to lose you Katniss." He tilts my head up and kisses me gently. I sigh heavily into the kiss. It makes me feel more relaxed. I feel safe with Peeta.
"Thanks...for staying with me..." I finally say. "And you're not going to lose me." I kiss his chest. I squeezes his arms tightly around me."Try and go to sleep again Katniss. I promise I won't let go of you."I try and relax as I feel myself slip back into my haunted dreamland.
