A/N: A short, happy little drabble. Because the angst is suffocating and their half hearted attempts at humor are mind numbingly dull.

Something sweet to tide you over until the next chapter of Coup D'Etat :) Which is right on schedule and should be done within the week!

They're older now and they've outgrown Kakashi's first impressions of them.

The one who he had thought would be the greatest, fly the highest (if only he'd let go of what grounded him) has fallen farthest.

The one who he had thought would be no more than mediocre can and has carried the world on her shoulders for miles.

And the one who he'd never taken seriously, he one he'd always secretly known would fall and fail, moved mountains, stopped wars and shone brighter than any of them.

After their first mission reformed; after Gaara, Akatsuki and Poison, Kakashi bought cinnamon buns. Together they ate in silence, just them; feet dipped in the water of the river that flowed underneath their bridge. Sugar on their lips, hearts heavy, they became stronger.

Slowly, with each mission and each batch of pastries he watched them fend off the rest of the world and retreat into the easiest, most natural of friendships. Time was the mortar that built it up, making it impossible to tear down. Naruto and Sakura share something that Kakashi can never infringe upon. And he doesn't want to.

He understands that the life that you make for yourself, the people you meet in your formative years, are precious like nothing else will ever be again.

So he does what he can to make their separation from the last piece of the puzzle just a little easier.

As they get older Sakura brings the beer and he keeps bringing the buns. The tradition is quiet, the repetition a comfort.

This time though Naruto smiles and shatters the serenity. Sakura buries her face in Sasuke's shoulder to muffle her laughter and the boy himself just smirks with soft eyes.

Kakashi gets the sense then, that he has done his job.

A/N: I really want to examine the mindset of a teacher in his position. Maybe who he would choose if it came down to it, who would he protect? Either way, some sugar to soothe the bitterness to come XD

I am in a oneshot mood again my dears! Or perhaps just writing in general. I hope to top, what I believe is the best oneshot I have ever written: In Which We Grow. Crappy title, but it made a friend who formerly disliked Sakura, adore her, so it made me happy!

PS: I overuse commas. I have abused my powers. I guess responsibility caught the late train in this scenario.
