The angels were afraid of what the future held in store, threatening to stop Sam if he didn't.
Castiel had sent him to 1973. He'd watch his grandparents' die and Mom make her Deal. Sealing with a kiss, her own death, starting a spiral of hunting and Deals.
Dean had learned all this was because Azazeal wanted his blood inside making Sam and others, a generation of psychic kids.
He'd tried to change the past only to end up bringing Azazeal's attention to Mary and his family. He hadn't been able to stop the past could he change the future?
