His heavy head rests on the shoulder of your sweater. Breathy gasps warm the crook of your neck. His large hands cling to the violet sweater while yours rub circles along his back. You rock him back and forth in the rocking chair. His glasses cut into your neck, but you dare not move in the slightest. Your strong brave husband cries into your petit frame like a babe to its mother. It takes all your might to not bawl along with him. So much pain is created during this war, and it is your honour to be his saviour sometimes.
He holds you in the night often, and when he isn't, you're rocking him slowly humming to his sobbing person. Everyone is trying to stay sewn together now, and you two are no exception.
It was only an hour ago when James came in with bags under his eyes and wringing his hands. This was an obvious message; another one of the Order is gone. You instantly stopped your work and pull him into an embrace.
It is now midnight as you rock James on your lap singing to him gently, softly. Fluently you rub his back and stroke his brown hair. You sing to him,
"So I crawl back into your open arms. Yes, I crawl back into your open arms."
His arms tighten around your waist and his tears drip down your collarbone like over-flowing wine. You quiet his hyperventilating breaths with noiseless shushing.
"I'm here. It's going to be alright. I'm here. We're together now."
"It's not us, it's everything around us," James breathes.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
And so forth you continue rocking his shivering, quaking body like a loving mother. And you can't help but let one tear escape your red eyes. You start to sing again,
"You fill up my senses, like a night in the forest, like the mountains in spring time, like a walk in the rain, like a storm in the desert. You fill up my senses, come fill me again.
Oh, let me love you.
Let me always be with you."
You spend the night rocking him until you both fall asleep in the old rocking chair. It's these nights that are the strongest remains of your love for each other. The kind out of a faery tale. You fill each other.
