Jayne was sittin' at the galley table playin' Tall Card with Mal, Book, Wash, Zoe, an' the doc. He had a cigar in his mouth, a bottle 'a whiskey on the table, an' his daughter sittin' on his knee. An' he were kickin' ass.
Not all by his lonesome, though. His 'lil genius of a toddler took after her momma. She was countin' cards fer him at only three years old! He felt his chest puff up with pride. 'Cuz of her, he knew each of the other crew members' hands. At this rate, Jayne weren't gonna hafta to do no chores fer a coupl'a months!
River walked in an' leaned 'gainst the door frame, smilin' all crazy-like. She were prob'ly just admirin' his fine self. He winked at 'er 'afore winnin' the entire pot. Again.
"Momma!" His baby jumped offa his knee an' inta his bao bei's arms. "I was on a team with Poppa!"
"Were you now?" River picked up their daughter an' winked back at 'im.
"Uh huh! I was counting cards!"
Gorramit. Kid couldn't keep her mouth shut.
Five hands cleared out his winnin's.
River smirked. "Cheater, cheater, pumpkin-eater."
"Cheater, cheater!" their girl repeated.
