What He Would Do

~Scarlett Fitch~

As soon as she placed the chain around his neck she knew that John felt as though he was wearing her life like a piece of jewellery. To be bought after one had admired it for so long from afar, paid for, brought out for use on a special occasion and then to be disposed of once it lost its silver tarnish and the clasp didn't do up properly.

Metaphorically speaking, her case wasn't too different. She was broken. He'd thought that he could fix her and he was wrong. It was only a matter of time before she went off completely, tortured into malfunction by these feelings she couldn't understand. And when that day came she would have to be stopped. She wouldn't be the one to kill him.

When he let her put it over his head and tucked it under his shirt she smiled in satisfaction. He would be okay without her. He was smart and ahead of what he needed to know. She attempted to show this in her eyes, she knew that if she tried to speak she'd say the wrong thing. That had happened a lot lately.

"What would Future Me do right now?" he asked her. She tilted her head to the side and surveyed him severely.

"Future You doesn't live here," she stated. "You do."

She was about to turn back to tidy up the garage when she felt his hand on her face, She looked up at him. There was a strange look in his eyes, one that she'd never seen before, not even with Riley as he moved his fingers through her hair, rubbing her cheek with his thumb. This tiny, miniscule action caused her for some inexplicable reason to give him a small smile, surrendering to his touch.

His hands were so warm and soft against her skin, brushing stray strands away from her face. Slowly they moved down to brush over her lips. She could sense each tiny dent of his prints against her flesh and it sent sparks of electricity down her spine. Then his fingers left her mouth and went to the back of her head, pulling her closer to him. His breath was hot on her face.

But then he stopped. Their eyes fluttered open. Their foreheads met as their eyelashes mingled. They stayed like that for so long, his hands stroking her hair, their lips threatening to meet but somehow that wasn't necessary. They'd only have to stay like that forever and everything would be okay. Cameron could feel his heart beating into her chest and somewhere, inside her, she felt something beat too.

After what could have been minutes, hours or several days they broke apart. Cameron tidied up the bench she'd been working on and John left the garage. When he'd gone, she touched her lips, remembering the feel of his fingertips and hands in her hair.

That's what Future John would've done.
