Title: Family

Summary: He leans down quickly but just before his lips met hers, she turns away. All he gets is hair and a stinging in his chest called rejection.

Disclaimer: I own nothing, nothing at all. (Depressing sigh follows that statement)

It's late, evening by their standards. He knows this because Eve is already asleep, he can hear her deep, even breathing coming from the next room. Selene is pouring over maps and rechecking their weapons stock. Again. She does this every night, looking for him, for the hybrid. Her precious Michael. David tries to push down the jealousy but he's been doing that for a year, and he's tired. So he watches her openly, waiting for her to notice. It doesn't take long.

"Do you have something to say?" She doesn't even look away from the map she's been studying and her voice is firm but flat. David just continues to stare. Finally she sighs, placing the map down and turns to look at him.

"What?" She bites out the word, clearly annoyed at his interruption. He doesn't say anything, silently closing the distance between them. He leans down quickly but just before his lips met hers, she turns away. All he gets is hair and a stinging in his chest called rejection.

"You shouldn't ever try to do that again." Selene doesn't have any anger in her voice, just a warning.

"Why not?" David's voice on the other hand, is full of bitterness.

"Because when we find him, he'll rip your heart out."

"He can try."

"No David, he will do it, without a second thought."

"Is that what you want?" She hears the hidden question. Who does she want? She doesn't even have to think about it.

"It's always going to be him."

"Selene, we could be a family. You, me and Eve."

"I have a family, with Michael. That is his daughter, I am his mate and he is mine!" She isn't delicate with her words, not even to spare his feelings. It's just not her style.

"And what am I?"

"At most, a friend. In the least, an alliance."

"Eve needs stability."

"Eve needs her father! And right now I am so close to finding him, to being back with him. I can feel him."

"Why hasn't he found you?"

"He's trying, we all are but there are obstacles in our way. We need to make sure we are all safe before we can be together again. If you can't handle that, then leave. We don't need you." She turns back to her maps and her plans and her Michael when she done speaking. It hurts to hear her say those words but he supposes it's better this way. At least now he knows, he's not wondering and hoping every night. She doesn't feel the same way as him, she is so wrapped up in Michael.

David shakes his head and turns to leave but stops when he sees Eve standing in the doorway, looking at him with just a little hostility. She walks passed him, pulling up a chair next to her mother and grabbing a map. It's a silent show of unity. She feels the same way, he can be a part of their coven but not their family. David barely stops to grab the bag he always has packed and then he's gone because as much as he loves them both, he can't watch them reunite with Michael. He can't be on the outskirts of their little family, it'll drive him to do something desperate. Despite his earlier show of confidence, he really knows he wouldn't stand a chance against the hybrid. So he'll leave, hoping that distance and time will heal his heart, hoping that he will move on and hoping that he never runs into Michael because he really doesn't want to die.

AN: So I rewatched all the Underworlds in order (again) and this is what I came up with after watching Awakening. I really hope there is a fifth installment because we need a Michael/Selene reunion scene, and a Michael meeting Eve scene. It just needs to happen!
