Please read while listening to Before the Storm by the Jonas Brothers :)
The rain was pounding down, lighting flashing through the inky darkness.
"Is...is this it, then?" A girl asks quietly, standing so still that the earth seems to hold its breath.
There is silence as she looks steadily into the eyes of the black haired boy in front of her.
He seems to be struggling with what to say, one hand opening and closing tightly.
"Is it finally over?" She asks again, blinking as rain trickles down her hair to her face, sliding off her cheeks to fall wetly on the ground.
"Are we going to forget everything?"
Thunder booms, an ominous sound to her ears, so when the boy speaks, it's not so much a surprise as an expectation.
"Yes." He says, the word coming out from between clenched teeth.
"Forget it all. Forget you, me, and everything I've ever told you. Forget that my world ever existed. Pretend that the only thing that is real is you and what you used to believe in."
A sob seems to catch in her throat, and for the first time, the boy realizes that the water running down her face isn't simply rain.
He seems to relent for a moment, his breath catching, and he reaches forward, but this time she steps back, one hand in front of her, face tightening.
"Please..." Her voice is barely more than a whisper, but he can hear it, he could always hear it.
In the years to come he would dream of that voice, of her voice, of her smile, of her laugh that made the world seem infinitely brighter.
He would dream and wish and dream again, but in the end always remember why, and know that he made the choice he did for her.
But then, at that moment, he wanted nothing more than to reach forward and clasp her in his arms, hold her so tightly that she could never run free.
He wanted to be able to love her, to have the simple freedom to be with her.
But as they stood there in the steadily darkening night, as they stood there in the rain pouring sadness into their hearts, he knew that what he wanted would never come true, that there was no dream sweeter than that which could never happen.
So instead he heeded her plea and moved back.
She closed her eyes, screwing them up for a moment, one hand reaching up to brush away her tears, and then she opened them, looking at him with such a piercing, knowing gaze that he felt as if she knew every single part of him-his shame, his cowardice, his love that outshone the greatest love stories in existence.
And then she smiled.
A smile so soft and tired that he almost fell to his knees in front of her, almost begged her to forgive him for his love for his brother that he couldn't betray.
But then she waved a small wave, the barest flutter of fingers and word of final goodbye, and stepped back, farther and farther into the distance, the dark night closing around her in a cloak of shadows, the rain obscuring his vision.
He stared after her retreating image for the rest of eternity, etching that last memory into his mind, hating the realization that that was it.
That it was finally over.
It was only when he finally broke and fell into the thickening mud, looking up to the skies as he transformed into his better form, that he realized the rain clouding his eyes wasn't rain.
And that no matter what, no matter the cost, for her, for him, or for himself, he would let go.
Forever.
Mehhhh. Not a good ending, yeah, I know. But I couldn't quite think of anything else, sorry. :\
So yuppp, as always, please read and review! You guys make my day. :]
