Sammy where are you?

Dean looked around in panic; Sammy had been standing right next to him just a few seconds ago. Dean had been looking at the prices on shelves trying to calculate if he would have enough for both the Lucky Charms and the Spaghettios.

Dad had been gone for over a week and he hadn't left all that much money so Dean had to make due. Sammy hadn't wanted to come with Dean to the store but Dean was not going to let Sammy out of his sight, not since the Shtriga a few months ago, so Sammy in true 5 year old fashion was not happy about that at all. When they walked into the store he had been pouting and stomping his feet but Dean had just ignored it because he knew that it wouldn't do any good to tell him to stop.

Dean had only wanted to get in and out as quickly as he could, he had only taken his eyes off of Sammy for a few seconds, and now he was gone. Dean walked towards the toy aisle because where is the first place a bored 5 year old goes in a store? but Sammy wasn't there. Then he checked the candy aisle but no Sammy there either. Now Dean was really starting to panic, his heart was beating a mile a minute and his breathing sounded like he had just run a marathon. What if someone had taken Sammy, Dad had given Dean an order to look out for Sammy and it seemed like he couldn't even do that right.

Dean felt his eyes start to tear up but he wouldn't let them fall, he hadn't cried properly since right after his mom died. Only babies cry his dad had told him once and Dean was certainly not a baby. He was 9 years old for god's sake almost 10, he would not cry. Dean started walking faster and faster. He looked everywhere, but he couldn't find Sammy.

Then an idea hit him and he ran in the direction of the part of the store they sold books and magazines. Sammy had been begging him to teach him how to read for weeks now, that kid loved the colorful picture books Pastor Jim had at his house and Sammy had said he wanted to be able to read them for Dean ran into the direction of the book aisle he saw a glimpse of a tiny figure sitting on the floor with his back to the shelves and a colorful picture book on his lap.

Dean sprinted the last few feet between them and scooped his little brother into his arms and held on tight. Sammy made a whiny sound as his brother distracted him from the pictures on the pages. "Sammy don't you ever wander away like that you hear me, don't you ever" Dean mumbled into Sammy's hair.

Dean's heart felt a million times lighter as he held his little brother in his arms, he felt like he could breath properly again and he just wanted to sit here forever with Sammy in his arms and not move a muscle. But Sammy wasn't having any of that. "Dean" Sammy said "can you read this for me, please" and held up the book. Dean looked at the front cover; it was The Cat in the Hat.

"Sure" he would do anything not to have to let go of his little brother even for a little while. And they sat there for a long time, Dean reading and Sammy listening, only the two of them in their own little world.
